Graphics is less about about colour and more about the actual things that happen on a screen. Honestly I can't see why you care about the colour palette (and anyone can actually change it in d2 without difficulty as that is one of the easiest modable parts). However in diablo 3 whenever I land a crit a massive lightning surge beams over you. There are explosions everywhen just when I hit a monster... Those are a lot of things your eyes have to adapt to, and it has been proven time and again that actually good constrast helps with not getting eye injuries; while having a lot of moving things in your field of view is actually bad for eyes.
Sass, do you even know what people are talking about when they say "dark"? Color pallete has nothing to do with "dark". "Dark style" is NOT black, absence of color is not "dark style"! Get over that argument Sass, everyone is trying to tell you this but you ignore it. You're starting to sound like the D3 Dev team.
Did you notice that you compared background with foreground? First screen has nothing going on in it. The second is a final boss battle in Hell difficulty. It's easy when you create your own rules.
So are we talking about "dark" like this?
^ Nah, that's just violence porn.
Its pretty much what their answer to any flaw that people point out about D3...You're intelligence is questionable with a reply like this.
"The game is not dark enough... It feels cartoony"
"Ah so you expected Violence Porn, almost Adults-only rating like Manhunt?"
"The game story is awful"
"Ah so you expected a Shakespearean level of character development?"
Thank you for making this thread Azzure, I continue to find your contributions helpful. I say that because, when I played through D3, I didn't want to believe that I was the only one who thought Blizzard's quality had gone to crap. I read the whole thread and there were some really good responses before the white knight showed up and derailed it.
I remember that unveiling game play footage very well, I downloaded the 1080p person and watched it many times. I didn't like the WoW shoulderpads but I assumed that the brightness was because it was most likely being unveiled on projectors so they decided to make that demo look brighter so that when they actually came to perform it for the first time the audience could definitely see what was happening. The Wizard trailer didn't fill me with hope to be honest, I watched it once and tried to forget about it, although it wasn't nearly as bad as the Demon Hunter trailer. Compare it to the D2 trailer, with the wanderer in a caravan with a stitched up mouth and visions of hell, yeah D3's trailers were actually off putting right from the start for me. I know that the voice over wasn't the most professional in those Diablo 1&2 trailers, but it was somehow effective. Like a dungeon master setting the tone for a great night of tabletop.
The claims that the story in D3 is fine because its 'background' and 'skippable' is ridiculous. We lost proper fast travel because the precious story needed to unfold in front of the player each and every time. It takes control of my camera or freezes the action I can't help but feel like I just ate one of those bad pistachios. Who wants to deal with rescuing that covetous Shen guy ever again? I wanted to mute all the speech before I even finished the first play through but I waited til I at least killed sheablo. I had such reverence for the understated storytelling of the first games, you said it perfectly when talking about the angels and demons methods.
Their claim was that the game would get darker by the later acts, oh dear. I wish the D3 team could know how I experienced my first run through. I had planned that I would play it in isolation and soak in all the atmosphere, but somewhere around act 2 I knew it stunk. After killing Belial (a high point) I played out the rest co-op with my best friend. The truth is that by the end of the third act we were shaking out heads and just laughing out loud and how ****ing stupid the game was. The demons with their pathetic threats, and the game was so stupidly easy I was just 1 shotting everything, then the bosses dying before they even finished their terrible monologues and dropping nothing good. I was laughing at the game but my friend was still somewhat uncomfortable with bashing what he knew to be a ****fest, because he knew how long I had been waiting for that day..... so sad.
