Death penalty opponents like the ignorant radio slut I was listening to this morning who trot out the old "worse to spend every day in jail thinking about it". She was asked about the issue below and essentially refused to comment - the woman's ignorance on most issues is practically part of the show, yet she gets angry when people mock her for it.

Ohio school shooter TJ Lane spewed vile and unprintable words today at the families of three students he killed, gave them the finger and then laughed and smiled as they described him as an animal and a monster.

Yup, pretty much. Fear of death & dying is one of the basic Freudian motivators, and the disingenuous claims about it being 'worse than death' smack of some serious horse-crap.

Athletes and students who do well I understand giving them an award. But including everyone else so they can have an inspirational speaker? Do that another day! It's like when it's some kid's birthday and the parents buy not only the birthday kid a present, but all the siblings (if any) because they "don't want them to feel left out." HOLD UP! It's the kid's birthday! that is THEIR day. Let them be in the limelight for that day, sibs can cheer from the side.

While I think we're getting to the same place here, again we're getting there for completely different reasons. I don't think the death penalty works as a deterrent for the people that would get it. I'd remove those who have something wrong with them such that they can never be allowed back into society. Once we've determined that, death penalty or life senetence is all the same. Seems to me death penalty is cheaper (or should be).

I do understand that granting the state the ability to kill means we need to be very careful about how we implement that choice, but it's silly to say there's NO ONE for which that's the best option.

That's not to say jail isn't a deterrent. i think for most people, it is a deterrent. i just don't think that works on psychopaths and such.

I don't see anywhere in there it saying everyone gets a prize. Only the ones that excelled in some field. The theater awards are probably BS, but academics and athletics are easily quantifiable. I support awarding excellence. I would think you would too.
