They deduct wages for national holidays over there? Do they also do that for vacations?

Nope just a question of who you work for and what the holidays are.
I have about as much as you and have trouble scheduling it all.

Long term employee with perks.

I contracted what I make though, and it's more competitive than over there, most have less than you guys have mandated.

Six weeks vacation? Yikes! Over here people start around 2 weeks at entry level and work their way up from there. 4 is a lot. 6 is unheard of. It is usually paid though.

As for holidays, some employers pay some don't. retail often doesn't pay unless you work, but if you do, they'll often pay at a higher rate. time and a half, or double time. At the banks, holidays were paid, part timers got 5 hours, full timers got 8.

The other places I've worked, all worked through holidays like labor day. just a regular day.

I guess your unions were screwed up too much by criminals - at least that's what I conclude from those Al Capone movies

6 weeks are the norm here, but some people have just 5. The law demands a minimum of 4 IIRC and if you get ill during your vacation, it doesn't count as such.

I work for a brokerage firm, so any federally recognized holiday, we get off. Basically, if the markets are closed, so are we.

Have no idea what you just said, but yes! lol! I work retail and I got off and I BELIEVE I am getting paid for it since I am a flull time employee. I think part time people got another day off (like Friday or Saturday, however the schedule was worked out) but they don't get paid. I think the only holiday we don't get paid for is Easter and it might be because, WAY back when, the store used to be closed on Sundays. Easter is always on a sunday.... ya get it.

I sometimes have to work on holidays, but we get "pay and a half", same as working overtime. Maybe that's because it's the hospital which is never allowed to close. If it did, we would return and find corpses littering the hallways with trails of tubes and body fluids. I can always dream.
