JomDarbert? Did they die? I'd love to see rekindled strategy posts on the main page, with the patch and all. I want to submit some builds for their approval but I dunno if they even exist anymore 0_o
There isn't really any element of strategy in this game, and the nature of the skill system and such things makes it pretty pointless to attempt heavy theorycrafting. Unlike its predecessor, Diablo III doesn't foster much discussion. Since there's not much to gain from theorycrafting (because there's nothing to really lose by not optimizing) nobody really bothers to do it. The game doesn't have the depth that creates strategy and communal discussion.
Theory crafting perhaps, but strategy is still heavily in place. I'd argue that games that facilitate Theorycrafting actually takes strategy out of the game. Theorycrafting basically uses maths to calculate the optimum build or play techniques that maximise damage or whatever your role is, basically have the effect of dedicating what build you have to use to get maximum damage. The only things that theorycrafting yields that's useful is what gear you should aim for, rather than what build you should use.
Strategy on the other hand discusses all the different skills and how one could utilize them together without needing too much aforementioned numbers. So in a way, Theorycrafting and Strategy works completely in opposite directions.
Theorcrafting isn't even part of the game anymore. Theorycrafting took place in the beta/early game where nobody knew the mechanics of skills, and thus had to craft builds from theory. Now, strategy reigns, everywhere from paragon leveling, to ideal mf spots, mf builds, progression builds, life/hit builds, life steal builds, and team builds that use synergy (i.e. "roll face with a friend" builds, like monk/barb, wizard/monk/barb, etc.). There's so much that can I think of to post in the strategy section!
I think the top builds section, where they rate the best builds, can be updated. Then, twice a week, they could spotlight a build that isn't top-tier, but really unique/fun. Users could submit builds and discussions in the class threads with a "strategy" tag akin to the Guide and Build tags.
So much stuff.
There is plenty of discussion if you don't consolidate your Diablo 3 internet visits on just one website. Between Reddit, official forums, somethingaweful, etc. I don't have problems constantly seeing new info/discussions.There isn't really any element of strategy in this game, and the nature of the skill system and such things makes it pretty pointless to attempt heavy theorycrafting. inc.gamers... just sort feels like it withered as a Diablo 3 community. Blame Blizzard's incompetence, blame the whiner trollfests, blame general "oh god I just spend 3+ months non-stop playing" burn out, whatever floats your boat. Whenever the veterans come back as the game gets changes or enough new blood consolidates on this place remains to be seen. But for now, I don't think this place (or any, maybe short of the Diablo subreddit. which functions more of as an aggregate anyway) can be considered to be the "internet center" of the Diablo 3 community.
maybe he lost interest. also, why bother? it's still a $60 beta game. who know what else may change once blizz figures out diablo isn't a mmo. 1.04 isn't a signal that the D3 team has graduated from remedial arpg design classes or the beta testers can hang those "mission accomplished" banners up yet.
I do kinda miss the build threads. I liked making them even though I knew the build/gear combo I used had already been done a million times. I know it really wouldn't make sense to do it now, since the builds would have relatively the same gear with main stat/Vit/resist all/crit. It's not like you can go run Hell Meph to get a certain unique to finish a build, since the damn legendary items are so hard to come by. There is no one place to go farm for Stormshield that has the best chance for it to drop.
Choosing a build used to be a dedication and an experience from the ground up. It also involved all kinds of unique and set items that weren't so damn hard to come by, like you said.
Now we just take our level 60 character, click a few buttons, and now we've got a new "build!" I'm not saying I don't like the new system for skill selection, because experimenting is much easier now and not as much of a time sink. It does lack that sort of attachment you have to a character; the character that took days to finally get the skills and equipment lined up and who is now level 90 and kicking *** for you.
When there was no re-spec'ing you had to plan everything, but now that it's customizable at any time there probably won't be as many build threads. I miss them though, because it's fun to read about what people are trying. Hell, I've gone and made a few characters just because someone's build guide made me excited to try it.
I feel completely differently, Because the way d2's skills and levels were designed, there were not much room for creativity, apart from the few tech points here and there, because of the massive difficulty increase in hell (and Immunities too), making it somewhat hard to avoid basing your build on another person's idea.
But with D3, I can experiment with my characters at will, and experience for myself whether or not it's viable, and find a build that works for me. This way, I feel much more like that this character is mine, because I developed the build. Other people may or may not like my build, and I may or may not like other people's builds. But I know I like mine, and I use it better than other people or other specs.
Strategy doesn't have to be solely dedicated to builds, in fact it could just be a collection of what people use skill/rune wise, sharing ideas and strategies about tackling different areas or different packs
