If the Cathedral has been abbandoned for more than 20 years, then why does it have torches lighted up all over the place?
Cain & Leah lit them maybe?
All 4 levels? Nice!
The cathedral hasn't been abandoned for 20 years. There have been adventurers and looters going down there the whole time; enough of them that New Tristram built up to support them.
there's been more than dozens of adventures and villagers going down there, you should always see at least 50 corpses when farming the levels so at least some of them must have lit the torches.
20 years? WOW!!!
My Blog
the oil in sanctuary is different from earth and a tiny drop can burn for months, mix this with demon blood and it can keep tombs lit for centuries.
Simple! It's magic.
Blizzard was lazy. On the D3 forums I brought this up with the solution of having only torches lit when humans are nearby (hero could light them if clicking them, otherwise no light from them). Having areas with torches and humans makes sense. Having areas that are dark with skeletons lurking about makes sense, they don't care about the dark. You could have 3 options: Lit torches, unlit torches, or smoking torches showing that someone was there before you.
This way areas are dark and light not always light, this would add to the atmosphere a lot.
Oh and yea.. that post on the D3 forums was deleted (someone quoted me so I found it)... This was before beta (or during) so it just shows Blizzard doesn't take constructive criticism that would improve a small aspect of the game well.
