oh i understand exactly how AND why they do it.... i just don't agree with it. at this point i HATE bringing up d2 references, cause i guess that either makes you a hater or a fan boy, i cant figure out which these days... but in d2 the numbers did NOT go up to 300... you were impressed by things that gave you 30, and it worked just fine. granted, with inferno i could see them bringing it up to 100 for a max, and maybe scaling back a few other things. but it would make it less of a chance of finding absolute garbage items.
I liked the large range of enhanced damage from Diablo 2 and how it only affected the base weapon damage and not any added elemental damage, but that's why the values were so high. It only took one good cruel modifier to get the damage you needed, rather than a high damage boost AND a good percentage enhancement.
On the flip side, if you found a good enhanced damage weapon it's the same as finding a high damage weapon in D3 in that without other affixes to help it's not that wonderful. The fools mod with max damage and attack rating based on level was possibly THE best affix to go with high enhanced damage, IAS is wonderful, and there's the Master's prefix that can add up to 150% enhanced damage and attack rating. Life and mana leach were handy as well. The D3 equivalent to these affixes are life leach, life on hit, critical hit damage, class specific helpers for class specific weapons and I guess sockets too. Oh, and stats (yawn) :P
To me, these Diablo 3 "helper" affixes for weapons are kinda dull compared to those in Diablo 2. This whole system where items are very oriented around main stats and vitality is taking away from item variety. If an item requires main stat, vitality, all resistance, that only leaves 3 other affix slots for something cool and interesting (but there aren't many things cool and interesting to add).
I'm still having fun, but it's not the same as Diablo 2 fun. I guess that's ok.
And on top of that, for the above average main stat vitality roll, you need three affixes. Then after the res all, you only have two left.

The different tiers wouldn't be such a problem if there were not such wide ranges on those tiers. You can do Act3 Inferno and see mods from late Normal on ilvl 63s. That's one of the bigger reasons, the other being you need at least 3 stats right to have even a decent item and 4, 5, or even all 6 to be good or great.
Blizzard designed a game to be excitingly rewarding from 1 to 60 with content, drops, systems and skills. Then it all comes to a halt. All you get is new items. Obviously people would notice the sudden lack of rewards after that and complain. I cannot begin to imagine how they did not see this coming.
Diablo 1 also came to a sudden halt with low stat cap and level cap but those were other times. The game in itself was exciting, somewhat difficult, dark and mysterious.
Diablo 3 has NOTHING exciting besides a fluid gameplay that is indeed better than D1 and D2, but that's it.
