I experiment with DW, sword and board. I might try it with a 2hander after the patch if I get a high dps one.
OH OH SURE.
I point this build out like 3 times on multiple venues but everybody suddenly listens to this guy. /nerdrage
But yeah, I've been rocking this for a while now, for exactly the reason Nachos points out. I REALLY can't wait for 1.0.4 because of the big damage buff HotA is getting.
Also... are you sure you don't get LoH from the AoE? I swear I have been. SOMEthing has been keeping me healed, anyway. My health goes up to full constantly, even outside of standing on elite DoTs with Crushing Advance. I guess the main HotA hit is good enough?
The main reason I like this build over WW/Sprint is not just the aesthetics of it, but also because you free up two extra active skill slots with it (since you don't need sprint or a primary). Having WotB, Battle Rage, War Cry, and Overpower + Crushing Advance all at once is just too fantastic. I'm not even entirely sure what to do with my 6th slot, to be honest. Right now I have leap on it, but I've been working on getting my defenses up and don't need Iron Impact as much anymore.
I'm kinda hoping the 1.0.4 Rend will make a nice addition to this build, as an extra use for all that fury. Not only will it be a nice source of damage that you only have to throw out once every 5 seconds, but if you wanted to keep it defensive you could even use the Blood Lust rune. With the damage buff, that might actually be worth something.
A goofy use of your 6th slot and excess fury might be Sprint + Rush, for that 12% dodge chance. Paired with the extra dodge from WotB, that's some substantial (nearly Monk-level) dodge that you can keep up pretty much indefinitely. Plus you can move fast if you need to.
I'd like to try this with a 2-hander, but don't really feel like spending the money at the moment.
Well, if there's a bunch of targets, 66% of your LoH per target, per HotA is still a bit of healing, just from the primary attack. It is really easy to test that the LoH doesn't work with the ground effect though. Just slam the ground and kite some guys across it. Your fury will fill up, but you won't get healing tics.
Yeah, the lack of available skill slots with ww/sprint is a bummer. The use of your 6th slot seems obvious though. It should be either marathon or run like the wind - for keeping thrive on chaos from pack to pack. Marathon if you stop to kill trash with HotA, and run like the wind if you just slide on by them and only kill elites. The main reason I like this build over WW/Sprint is not just the aesthetics of it, but also because you free up two extra active skill slots with it (since you don't need sprint or a primary). LoH aside, could you stack % to freeze/stun/etc. with this still to stunlock?
Sounds like a preference to me. I mean, there's no rule that says I must go fast or always have WotB up. Heck, what if I don't use Thrive on Chaos? Could use Insanity or Slaughter.
Also, after the patch it sounds like fighting trash mobs will become more worth it, what with their quadrupled drop rate. The way I see it, sprint might let you move faster, but more offense would let you kill things faster. You could probably do some math and tell me that sprint saves you the most time ultimately, but in general it just seems like a preferential choice to me.
Well if killing trash turns out to be worthwhile in the patch maybe you could make a case for not having sprint, but right now, as things are, no, it isn't "preference." Sprint will simply let you farm way, way, way, faster. Even with moderate gear you spend more time traveling to elite packs than you do killing them.
Even if we do end up killing trash, there will be a threshold where your damage is high enough that you spend more time running from fight to fight than you do killing them, but certainly with trash killing included the gap is much less extreme.
Speed is everything, people are getting 25% movement gear, use frenzy with 15% speed, sprint and berserk, getting total of 100% movement bonus, this variant is getting more and more popular as gear is better, and such trades are possible (to get crappy uniques with mf and movement).
Haha, i've been rocking this build for awhile also I just wanted to help give people an alternative to people who like to stand their ground in this game. I bought into the WW/sprint hype but I just dont like relying on tornadoes and everyone goes on about saving farm time but i'd rather enjoy my build than save 5 minutes farming. I loved whirlwind in diablo 2 but I just can't get into it with this game i'm not sure why. With the buff coming in the new patch I think there will be more interesting barbarian builds to work with. Also I feel it may be inevitable that tornados will get the wicked wind treatment at some point.
I thought WW/Sprint was hilarious at first. And then it became, like, the only widely known good barbarian build, which bothered me. I stumbled across this build by accident when I was trying to make SS + Rumble work. (thought maybe Devil's Anvil would make it easier to keep things away from me)
Well even if Sprint is really useful for farming to the point where its bad to give it up, at least this build lets you pick a different rune for it.
