Well, it's not out of stinginess, but because of the situation after WW2. He didn't have to suffer from hunger back then, but food was much less available than today and others might have had less to eat.
My mother lived on a farm (i,.e. there was enough to eat) and she said it was normal to scrape the worms off the bacon in summer. It hung in the smoke chamber all the time, that was the way to prevent it from spoiling. In summer, a few flies and their eggs might have survived that place. We once found out that my own Grandfather was eating green bacon, and frequently. These things toughen you up (as in, don't kill you makes you stronger).
As said, that was after the war!

The Battle Over Alcohol Pricing
I mean - seriously? ****ing really?
I'd better just pay over a chunk of extra cash each month for my modest use of alcohol to protect Darwin candidates from themselves. I swear I am going go nuclear over this accelerating trend of interference![]()
oh joy, social engineering
Hmm. After a busy day, I decided to cheat for dinner and heat up a couple of little frozen chicken pies that I bought from the supermarket. Once heated through, the pies stank like rotted flesh, garnished with rancid pee. They really gave off a disgusting stench.
I recalled the various posts here about food safety and quality assurance, and such. There are bound to be informed people with useful opinions. So my question is:
How many of these pies would be safe for me to eat at a single sitting?
