That's... an incredibly generic description... Do you do something related to seismic?
You can almost do the same as a driver up in Fort McMoney on the tar sands due to the isolation pay. Spend most of the day sitting around in line for a load, grab a laptop and get on the wifi while you wait.
Exactly!
I do directional drilling, but I see most onsite positions as having lots of free time (stay off the floor). Geologists, mudloggers, solids control, MWD, fluids engineers, even pushers and comen have the idle time. From my perspective, it comes down to getting paid a day rate (or 12 hour tour) and having to stay on location 24.
Seismic...those juggies came through my part of the world when I was a teen (I'm 47) and were a large part of my interest and pursuit in the field. I thought, man, these guys get paid for getting on a helicopter, spending all day in the mountains and setting off dynamite! But the clencher was how they spent their downtime- babes, beer and blow galore...
Yeah, even roughnecks earn 500 a day thanks to that location-stay wage system. The even better thing is that the Tar Sands are largely seasonal, and Canadian Employment Insurance only requires a minimum hour count to qualify to withdraw. You hit that in three months due to staying on location/being "always on". So you spend two weeks a month in isolation for half the year, then you spend the rest of the year back home filling out forms for the government. Earn around $100,000 for six months work and six month vacation.
I'm consistently surprised that the oil patch companies need to search for workers and hit up job fairs so hard.
Sorry Bowzer, didn't mean to offend. My post was not directed at anyone here, just a reply directed at the thread title. The tl&dr was more of a joke than a statement. You have one of the jobs I described, a gamer's dream. If I didn't have the free time to enjoy other pursuits while working, I would seriously consider another line of work. I just wish I could do it all from home...
or be a stay at home parentthen you can 'work' in your pjs...
