SOJ any good for DH assuming rolls for 6% cold dmg, 4% inc elite dmg, 8 disc and one random good damage affix roll like attack speed, crit or crit dmg? Using soj with 6% and 11-21 dmg affix on barb and tooltip dps goes up 6,5% and not even counting elite bonuses.
8 discipline and 1 sec snare for all physical attacks are worth usage already, but what comes to damage would rare attack speed/dex/crit dmg ring be always better or is there any high dps brake point when % damage affixes are worth more?
I thought the 6% cold mod only increased preexisting cold damage, not just add it straightup. Still might be good with frost arrow, but the real unique addition SOJ provides is max discipline. I might even get one myself.
No. All elemental % damage modifiers add top of physical damage that is weapon base + all min & max damage modifiers in weapon itself, ring or amulet. Item % damage modifiers do not work with elemetal damage component. Then depending spells, to have an cold effect, skill itself needs to stay physical and cold component is added on this. If skill modies all damage to fire for eg there is no cold effect but damage is still applied.
I'm using puzzle ring with 2% cold damage on DH and hungering arror snares all mobs incuding elites making caltrops typically not needed if not extra fast enemy.
same here, puzzle ring with 2% cold, not the best ring I can use but the cold makes it so valuable. I did a bit of testing with other attacks as to what applied the cold and what doesn't, made a thread about it somewhere on the strategy forums asking about cold damage and tal rasha's amulet.
Yes, it is great ring with proper stats for DH. However you need to be sure you have the right weapon to get the cold damage rolling.
Physical damage, yes, the 6% cold damage only calculates into your base weapon damage and physical min-max damage affixes. If your weapon states for example "Adds 200-500 Poison Damage", the SoJ 6% won't affect that part of your bows damage at all.
So, if your weapon does only Physical Damage, I think SoJ is *Best in Slot* item for DH as it provides so much utility and you don't lose too much damage at all due to the 6%.
BiS SoJ would look like:
6% Cold Damage
~30% Critical damage OR 3.5% Crit Chance ~ OR ~ 7% IAS
8 Max Disc
4% Damage to Elites

looks good, absolutely 0 chance of anything like that appearing in the HC AU, for anything but crazy prices. the +cold and +disc would do it for me, the rest is just bonus!
Yeah the skill does matter, I'm just saying that the elemental dmg on a weapon itself doesn't make a difference. I tested it on multi-shot with fire at will (changes dmg to lightning) and it didn't apply the slow effect, if that helps clarify things.
Yes it applies slow, but doesn't affect the elemental part of your weapons damage.
Lets say you have two different weapons which both does average damage of 1000 per one arrow.
Bow #1: 900-1100 total damage with all of it's damage coming from physical modifiers.
Bow #2: 600-1400 total damage where 200-600 damage comes from *Poison Damage* affix.
In normal situation both bows do excatly the same amount of damage and using non-elemental skills such as Evasive Fire, Cold damage from SoJ will apply the slow. Then, why is it better to use physical damage bow for SoJ or any other item that adds % damage?
Bow #1 with SoJ Bonus = 0.06*900 & 0.06*1100
Bow #2 with SoJ Bonus would be 0.06*(600-200) & 0.06*(1400-600)
As you can see, you lose out a lot of damage. On the first bow the damage add to your weapon is 54-66 and the second 24-48.
I made up the bow numbers out of my head but if you are building *the perfect* DH and you can get your hands on such a SoJ I mentioned before, you might as well work on the best possible damage type on your Bow too.
