Advanced gems plans, are they worth buying?

I wonder if the plans for top three gems are worth the price on GAH? Do you think they can change in value? Today emerald has obviosly 10x more value due to the dex and crit, than other gems, at first it was ruby as I remember...

    ^ You mean Emerald, right?

Some time ago I bought the plan for Flawless star Emerald for 3m and sold it for just under 5m when rmah commodities launched.

The profitability margins on gems are razor thin, and probably always will be.
Unless you expect yourself to be making hundreds of gems for personal use, it's more worthwhile to sell the plans and buy what you need.

There are so many of those designs out there. You can really forget about making a profit with them unless you have direct access to a very large number of people who would like you to craft for them (aka if you are a famous streamer or something), and even then the profit is questionable. With only a couple million at most for most designs, I already know several people I trust who can make gems for me for free, so it shows you how common those things are.

The only advantage of buying those is not having to find someone to make them for you, not to mention going to the AH and buying for at least 17% higher price than the crafting cost.

Re: Advanced gems plans, are they worth buying?

Hm, thanks for replies. I used gem crafting calculator with current price for flawless square emerald (3600) and still the crafting costs were low enough to make profit with selling gems (if I done nothing wrong) after 15% substraction... however I donīt know whether the gems are selling for the listing price on AH.

Another issue here, I tried therefore to buy FL SQ Emeralds and I got refund afterwards, so I bought 81 of them for 81k, although the price was 3600 listed. Then I bought another 81, but this time for 260k. Can please someone explain to me, how the commodities market works?

    sry for english

note that although most of the cost of crafting a gem is based on the gold, most of the profits profit depends basically on two things:
    - the cost of the flawless squares
    - the cost of the tomes of secrets

you have to follow the market closely.. prices can vary a lot during the day, and by day.. if you are able to buy those 2 at a cheap price, you can make a profit after the 15% blizz fee...

although the cost of all the gems are different (emeralds the most expensive; ruby the cheapest) the margin for all gems are similar

the margins can vary depending on the time, but based on what i did:
    flawless stars: 1k-50k profit
    perfect stars: 1k-100k profit
    radiant stars: 100k-500k profit

Again, these numbers can vary a lot depending on the time, and times you can also lose gold after the fees.

also, because most of the cost of a gem star or above is based on gold, these ones lose value over time.. so dont stash them

personally i wouldnt suggest you on crafting and selling gems.. the process is really tedious, clicking on all those fl sq gems.. and the profits arent even that good..

like someone else suggested, if you need them, just buy them from people that are already crafting them... there are people who do it for free, but a lot of them do it for a 30k-50k fee.. so basically thats their margin

    gl~!

Thanks a lot for advice, yeah, I think the value of SQ gems a ToS is important, you can find them yourself too, but what I donīt get are the commodity market refunds after buy, so I really canīt be sure what the final price will be. Btw, I bought the plans anyway first one for about 3,7M, second 2,3M or so.. which was maybe 100k under the listing price. Need at least 8-10 myself. Agree on that the value will decrease over time.

I just found my first jeweler plan, a Perfect Star Emerald ! I got excited (playing a Monk) and tried to cube up and found I was missing Flawless Star Emerald just below it. The GAH price is 50% higher on this lower plan !? Annoying ! Why is so expensive for a lower plan ?

Re: Advanced gems plans, are they worth buying?

I'm really sorry to be the bearer of bad news gakky, but here's the deal. People KNOW you need hte flawless star em to get to the perfect star emerald. Thus, without the flawless, the perfect star emerald pattern is (in practical terms, excluding ah sales, trades etc) useless. I regret selling the flawless star em pattern I got in act 1 inferno months ago. I sold it for 1 mil and I'm pretty sure that'd be a super bargain these days, but at the time, 1 mil was an amount of gold I'd never seen, so i was actually happy about it for a while. In any case, you could just try buying the flawless star pattern in trade or just keep looking for a price drop on the ah. I'd prob do both. I feel your pain, I'm a demon hunter and the highest I can create right now are just plain old Star Emeralds. Good luck figuring it out.
