Just a heads up for those who don't frequent the official game guide or the general d3 thread:
from http://us.battle.net/d3/en/game/guid...ent#magic-findMagic find affects the quality of items you acquire from killing enemies (but not treasure chests, vases, weapon racks, or other environmental objects). It doesn’t give you a chance to get more items on a given kill – instead, it increases the chance that an item you find will be magical, and more potent than it would be otherwise. When a monster drops an item, Diablo III randomly determines the item’s quality from a chart that includes item quality and the number of affixes present. The game randomly "rolls" on each property in the chart to determine which affixes your item will get. Your magic find score is applied as a bonus to these rolls.
For example, if a monster has a 4% chance to drop a 6-affix rare item and you have +50% magic find, it now has a 6% chance to drop that item.
Item quality is checked in the following order:
- Legendary
- 6-affix rare
- 5-affix rare
- 4-affix rare
- 2-affix rare
- 1-affix rare
- magic item
Using the above example, when your roll ‘misses’ a higher-level item quality, the item generator proceeds to the next lowest item quality in the chain (in this case, checking to see if you got a 6-affix rare, then checking for a 5-affix rare, and so on). Your magic find bonus applies to each roll. If the same monster has a 10% chance to drop a 5-affix rare item and you have 50% magic find, you now have a 15% chance to get a 5-affix rare item.
Perhaps the most important thing here is that mf affects how many affixes your rares get. As I recall, that's not how D2 worked, so some of you might not know about it.
Yeah, I've seen folks obsessing about their %MF a lot more lately. It's like, now you have to have main/vit/ar/crit AND %MF. I haven't looked at AH prices. I bet that "discovery" put some prices through the roof.
I put it on if/where I can w/o sacrificing battle readiness, but none of my 3 has more than 16% w/o Valor. I still find decent rares here and there. But it makes things that much more frustrating for the selffound; more pressure to use the AH with all of its botted crap.
I dunno. All 3 of my toons have gotten as far as killing Maghda, and my Barb is now tough enough to stomp anything in A1. My other 2 still have to skip some stuff. I don't feel as though I'll ever get brick-walled just because I don't want to use Blizz's much-ballyhooed AH. I'm pleased that I've gotten this far without it.
The sight of this in game worked as a fine brick wall to me. While I'm confident my monk can kill belial before the enrage, I'm 100% sure I can't concentrate to kill him enraged. I was sloppy, I could remove the 5% HP left for Belial but he went all:

People posting videos are killing belial with 1k AR and some DPS. Also, the guy was wearing a shield. I have crit, stuff, 600 AR and some DPS. Maybe I can kill belial if I pay attention, play well and try to add more AR and use the offensive aura. But for what reason? Meet Ghom? Anyway, it always happens - I can kill Belial, but everytime he stomps me with 1% of life I need to take a break for a few weeks... Enraging is nothing compared with DH getting 1hit koed, truth to be said.
On MF: I hate it. I have a fair decent monk that walked up to belial enrage timer. I have to make drastic changes on his gear if I want decent findings on a regular basis. Also, if you don't have 200 MF, you fell like some sort of social pariah on MP community... Even if I go there and gear myself again for this new reality, MF will change soon, so... MF should be nerfed/removed and drops increased.
Mf/Lres/all res/dex/crit or crit chance/vit = 6 affixes needed... everywhere? + LOH, movement speed, health globes... Adding MF on the gear is just to much. It almost turn some rares into uniques for some spots. If 1 mod is missing/replaced = fail.
This is really useful information. It probably wont change how i play or gear that much, killspeed and survivability still need a lot of work, but its nice to know paranoia isnt messing with me when i think im not getting good rares, and then i am.
You can still find gear just as good without MF... it just takes longer. You'll get more 6prop rares with MF, but you wont get "better" 6prop rares because you have MF... only more.
Maybe they fix it on 1.0.4 making more skills better. That would enable build diversity, making more 6props good. Right now, mr. monk doesn't need "better 6prop". He needs "way too specific 6prop". If 1 affix is missing, I can handle. 2 are missing = trash. Ex.: If a find a item with 4props + MF instead of Lres as a 5th = bad item. I can't just go there and lose 50 res with monk. If I get Cold res instead of LRes, I'm already in trouble. Maybe even "more items with 6 affixes" don't make the cut for some builds.
Btw, it's just a monk example - it would take some serious paper work on my monk to determine what I need to do to have some MF. Maybe I can axe some max life, resits, vit, crit for some MF and still be able with Act 1 runs, since it seems to be way too good axe kill speed/survivability for MF. I'm not doing crazy calculations as we speak just because I don't know what they gonna do with MF, drop rates, etc. Maybe this is the annoying part. My DH was alive and kicking, at act 2 door. He could kill decently on act 1. Then, my skill just became bad, IAS got nerfed, etc...
Right know, I don't think world's gonna end before december, I'm really waiting for some sort of stability. It will take months to find the "right gear" on inferno. Then, after months, will I be in need of "other gear"?
Tl,dr and a little bit OT:
Spoiler
I have a really hard time reconciling that with the posts from a month back complaining that everyone only needed two properties.
I got used with it. People complained they only needed 2 stats, while other people complained that they needed more than 3 affixes on AH search. Maybe thats because 2 stats + high dps weapon can take you long, just to find out there are 3 things missing.
Fact: take any aspect of d3 and you have a crowd to complain, alongside a couple people to defend (and get quoted and tagged with fanboi $5). That and the "I'm a lawyer", "My father is a lawyer" are 2 reasons to read official forums
I made peace (ok, a little) with some aspects I dislike and I will wait for patches. Right now I'm waiting for the "fix on ???". I only changed my mind about RMAH - I was planning to sell things, but with the possible dupes, money not arriving, etc. I will just skip it. (By the way, imo, the number of "trade errors" on RMAH seems to be a little percentage, or even on a expected number of errors margin).
Honestly, I'm starting to believe that the real long-term problem is the image of the game, not the game itself. Drop system seem to be way too broken, but if the so-called "d2 players" really worked into self finding their enigmas, they would see that the drop system seems to be "a little broken", considering we don't have HRs and the godly stuff tend to be unique/set/godly rare (maybe it would be better have more "useless" sets to have more set items, i.e.).
In the end of the day, it seems that if we had more bot/duping, with a flood of godly rares for 100k gold on GAH, people would be more pleased.
I tend to talk about this game only on SPF because I don't really like to read stuff like:
"On d2 you could only complete a good set with trading" or "In d2 it's impossible to find a HR by yourself". If those two statements were the truth, then, yep, the d3 drop system is a mess beyond fixing...
As a SPFer, I see the current drop system as something broken/a little broken (I want to see a green item). Also, the builds shouldn't depend on godly rares. After a few patches, I imagine happy SPers and the "3soj4UrNigma" people still upset.
I may be against the grain here but im happy with the drop system. I play self-found with me and a partner, and were currently in act one inferno. We die quite a lot, but we are getting better and gear upgrades come at a decent pace. I think this is the plus side of the gearing system, you can have a decent piece of gear (say shoulders with strength and vit) then add some all resist, then some crit chance etc.
Regarding the rareness of items, i ran countess, without teleport in 1.12 for hours to make a mid level runeword. Grinding through A1 inferno is more fun, and more rewarding when it comes to upgrades.
I dislike the drop system because... well... Cruel Blade Bow of Alacrity stuffed with 2 Shael runes. I 99'd a character with that weapon in D2. @ 7 FPA.
That ought to tell you everything that's wrong with D3's item system.
