So I got my first Unique today, some lame level 41 bow with terrible stats. Upon looking at the AH to see if all versions of the bow are like this I discovered that Uniques may as well be 'rares' since they all seem to be completely different. Not just widely varying stats but totally different ones, many that didn't even make sense for a bow meant (I hope) for a DH...
I guess I wonder what the problem was with the old way of making uniques have certain stats but differing amounts only.
That is partially false. Uniques have certain fixed stats with range plus some random affixes. It isn't a problem in of itself, but add this with the rarity of the item and it becomes a big problem. They are fixing uniques somehow soon(TM), but how would they approach it I do not know.
I didn't have to care about uniques so far because I found none at all in my 160 hours of play time :(. That's pretty terrible. However, it seems to me that there's almost no difference between rares and uniques, so if uniques are even more rare than rares wich roughly the same affixes, why do they exist at all?

"uniques" actually dont exist in d3. The items you are discussing are called "legendary items", at least by blizzard.
As i undestand it blizzard wanted more randomness in d3 than there was in d2, and therefore made changes for d2 uniques, including the name.. I suppose they changed the name to sort out some confusion, but still the color of such and unidentified legendary item makes it feel like the old d2- unfortuneatly there has so far been little reason to get excited over d3 legendaries, since only very few of the are usefull, and none are superior.. (Any legendary / set item can be beaten by a rare in usefulness)
So far Ife found 7 legendaries and 3 set items, none of them even worth considering for any class. Any of these items are inferior to 25k items of that lvl (ah value)
Some legendaries can be usefull, though, (w the right rolls) and some of those can be crafted. Perhaps the best use for "****ty" legendaries is to salvage them and hope to get legendary crafting mats.
Blizzard stated at the launch that they wanted long term stability in the d3 economy, as opposed to the constant economy reset (ladder reset) in d2. In my oppinion this must mean a hellofalot for how the items works and drops in d3. It might look and feel similar to d2, but personaly im sure it isnt :/
