Hardcore Belial Wipe at 5%

So I met some people farming Act I we decided to make a progression group. Our party consisted of a monk/barb with typical builds, and a wiz/wd with typical builds. The barb/monk had about 15k dps, myself and the wiz had 20k+. Everyone's resists were more than enough for the fight, I was the only person without 1k resists and I had no trouble avoiding the acid meteors. I told the barb to switch to 2h when it was Phase 3 to max out dps (the plan was for him to switch weapons berserk and stand in slam dance for 130% more damage total), he was near me so I had shout the whole fight. We positioned ourselves on the NW or Left side of Belial, while the Wiz/Monk were on the SE or Right side.

The whole run was smooth and quick we had no trouble clearing elites, we even pulled 2 packs at once in the desert wastelands and managed to survive. Kulle was a joke. We all felt very comfortable with the group's damage that was our mistake. Belial has almost 28million HP in phase 3 so that means everyone needs to do > 20k DPS. I got cocky and didn't change my build because I felt comfortable with my damage, I could have switched out and gotten haunt/locust swarm or spirit barage-phantasm in order to stack more damage on him. One of our major downfalls was our Wiz was not using venom hydras, and our monk was specced more for AOE, and our Barb wasn't switching to 2hander to max out DPS. All of these were things we could have done to do the last 1.2m damage but we neglected them because were were overconfident.

It's really no big deal for me I farmed up this gear in about 5 days of farming Act I doing butch runs. I actually think this is a lesson to learn. I was going to google Belial's HP with 4 players in group on inferno but decided not to because I felt like we had it in the bag. I don't play softcore so this was a learning experience for me.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My experiences tell me that the DPS number listed doesn't take into account DPS uptime and the number of damage sources for DPS. The difference between a Wizard having 2 damage sources and 3 damage sources is noticeable to me in terms of the pressure being put out on mobs, and it's not something that can be easily theorycrafted but learned from your journeys.

I'm kind of ambivalent about the enrage timers being added, particularly in hardcore. I liked being able to skill-check a fight without a minimum gear level. Now you must have this much DPS to pass. Feels kind of arbitrary. I'm glad they didn't add an enrage to Diablo, at least, so that fight can still be skill-checked.

This makes me quite concerned about tackling Belial HC with my barb... I'm only doing 13k dps, but I haven't had any problems with enrage timers on other bosses yet.

Sorry for you loss - 4 lvl 60's in one epic fight :( Would have been cool if at least one of you survived to tell the tale.

sorry for you lost OP. It's really hard to do Belial with 4 players especially when WD/Wiz are doing that little DPS. You have to remember that WD/WIZ are not constantly attacking. They also have to avoid all the incoming hit from Belial so the actual DPS is lower.

VHD: I think your 13k DPS should be fine. Just make sure you have all your cool down and use Berserker + Earthquake. I have a barb in SC that is doing about the same dmg and I could test him out for you. I believe you should be able to pull it off 2 Berserker + Earthquake before Belial enrage timer hit.

I like enrage timers though, as long as they are not hidden. I'd also like if they added a graphic indicator of the enrage time remaining.

I have a barb in SC that is doing about the same dmg and I could test him out for you. I believe you should be able to pull it off 2 Berserker + Earthquake before Belial enrage timer hit.

If you have time, I'd appreciate the feedback. I'm also running 500 regen/sec which should help.

My barb on softcore was doing approx 12.5k dps on inferno Belial. I was using frenzy with maniac, Revenge whenever it popped up, and WotB early in the fight. I ended up dying several times due to enrage timer. Even when I switched one of my passives to Boon of Bul Kathos to get a second WotB before the enrage, I was still dying. It took increasing my dps to the neighbourhood of 18k to get a clean kill. Even then it needed good execution.

The Belial fight, especially for a barbarian, is pretty straightforward when it comes to survivability. With good defensive stats, you should be able to stand still and dps through everything except the acid meteors. For the meteors, Ignore Pain with Iron Hide gives you a lot of leeway in avoiding them. As such, dps is what matters in that fight. a quick and dirty boost with Berserker Rage and Battle Rage might make up the difference for you, assuming you're not using them already.

If I was going to tackle inferno Belial on hardcore, I probably wouldn't walk into the fight with less than 20-25k dps.

I killed Belial on my first ever try a couple days ago on my barb with ~14k base dps. I used Berserker Rage instead of Earthuake to get dps up to ~18.5. All defensive passives, too (no LoH). During Wrath, dps was like 41k. You can Wrath twice and I was able to tank everything and then run around to avoid the puddle/explosion circle thingies. 20-25k base dps is complete overkill and will require extremely expensive gear unless you make an extremely major resist/armor/life sacrifice.

18.5K DPS is alright if you can get extremely high uptime on your DPS, which you seemed to have done. To ensure a kill, I would have to be fairly brave to go in with those numbers. I think equipping a 2-hander could be the solution for some folks struggling with the enrage timer.
