Question about magic find and companions

I equipped my companion with some MF gear and found that my character sheet's MF went up a little. Is this mf added to my kills, or does it require my companion to get the killing blow?

You get 20% of the MF your follower has. Maxed out at 25% extra with Templar with 25% on weapon, 20% on shield and rings, and 40% on his amulet. Have a good one!
