I believe the reasoning was that it's like opening a gift wrap. Like in D2. Which is a good concept. Though there's few critical errors why it doesn't work so well in D3. First of all it takes too long, secondly in order for identifying to be exciting there would have to be a much higher chance for the items to be good(the thrill of identifying an unique ring in D2 or other unique item hoping for a good roll) instead of identifying just so you can vendor them
There's always a small chance that good affixes spawn on under 60.
I'm used to the crappy drops in D2 - useless low level and even elite items sets/unique, of which makes up a majority of the drops, 99.9% rares are junk, 99.9% blue are junk.
In D2 everything was random which makes mfing a pain in the arse (you can spend weeks mfing ilevel 85 areas and never get anything good at all, except an inventory full of unstackable gems and a pile of unsellable junk). I play new ladder for a week or two and then I'm done with the game.
This is a huge HUGE improvement. It makes mfing more fun because you will never know when a nice affix spawn on your items, but with 5 valor buff at least ONE rare will drop from elites and TWO from bosses.
Imo, amulets and rings are a must for me and weapons under 60 are garbage. I pick up the rares to id and sell.
I grab everything from 61 and up for salvage and sell the essences (around 1700 gold, depending on value or tax).
Armor: Imo, it depends on where you're farming and if you sell unindentified items. If you sell unindentified items, maybe it doesn't worth to grab anything under lvl 60, since a unindentified seems to always sell better (faster + good money). More unindentified = more gold than good lvl 54 and up armor. If you ID everything and want to sell things on GAH, then rare armor pieces can be good - but with the current offer and low demand, you end up with junk filling your auction slots.
The best use for good lvl 54+ items are using them on alternates. Problem is that alternates are kinda useless...
Conclusion: People should try to get the most fun from this game possible. In my playstyle, Iding <60 armor is cool, so I do it. I do it but consider it a potential waste of time, since you can have more profit farming gold. Isn't a "waste of time", it's a potential one...
