It's usually not a good idea at all to tell a cop that you drove too fast because you had a reason (except things like "look at the back seat, there's my wife who's getting a baby right now" or so). With that, you admit that you did it on purpose which might lead to a heavier fine if the cop is in a bad mood or one of those 100% correct types. If they ask you why you did it, better tell them that you didn't pay enough attention to the speedometer or so.

Generally, the best approach is to own up to it and apologize (genuinely, if possible), all friendly like. Being humble and honest can earn you some points, at least around here. That would be my approach today, I'm too old for those other shenanigans these days. If you own up to it and admit that it was wrong, you probably won't get out of it, but at least they may go a little lighter on you, not feeling like they need to teach you a lesson.

Of course that only works for State cops and the Sheriff's Department. Local Town cops have turned into ruthless tax collectors since the state and federal money has evaporated over the last decade.

Well, they keyed the symbol, included profanity directed at me as a conservative Christian, and though IIRC it was at a mall it was not likely to have been true "punks" (unless you tend to regard brainless socialist oiks as "punks" regardless of all other factors, which might be a good rule but is too broad for me to use). I have no reason to assume they were under-age, i.e. per current Democrat metrics, children under the age of 31.

What I think is just GREAT is how you and two others have leapt to the defence of the little shytes who keyed my car. If they had been conservative Christians doing something even remotely unpleasant, I wonder if I'd have heard demands for floggings?

Fun life lesson for my son - he went to an ultra-leftist day school complete with hippies last year, and enjoyed it so we plunked down even more cash for this year. The first day, he is told some of the typical Lefty happy-speak, "There are only two rules!" (I think it was clean up and stay together). Being a smart boy, he's wondering why he's constantly being badgered about what he is & isn't allowed to do if they only have two rules, particularly when one of the rules is apparently let the hornets* take over the sandbox.

My point is that if the situation were reversed, I tend to think that you & the others would not question the scenario as stated. i.e. acceptance of the "Tolerant" claim at face value.

That is your claim, and I don't find it terribly accurate. I grew up in a leftist household, attended leftist schools, and aside from the military have worked in liberal workplaces. Therefore, I am well versed in just how hate-filled many on the Left truly are, even as they try to claim the <real> evil is on the "Right". Just as Techno undoubtedly sees the worst of conservative behavior (as did I when I lived in the same unpleasant environs), I've seen the Left all of my life, and I believe my generalization is more than accurate; don't you recall Llad12's behavior here? Prime example is the TEA Party activities compared to the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations; when I attended the 9/12 hoo-hah in D.C. there were no arrests, and at this point the OWS serious crime list tops 400 last I checked...
