The main benefits as I see it is that by making the monster stand and cast his abilities a unit is taken out of the game temporarily, however, if you want to stand and fight, you have the option to, every now and again, control which abilities he can get off. No more shielding instant recast? Yes please.
I think this would be nice, as well as add cooldown icons to their abilities under the boss's name/health bar.
Re: cast animations, kinda like the berserker overhead swing which you can interrupt, it would certainly add a bit of strategy.

The cast time should definitely not go over 1 second for any ability... Besides which it opens the way for the Haste affix, which seems a simple fit with Extra Fast.
Illusionary casters? That would be pretty psycho if you think about it. Bogus cast timers all over the screen. Yikes.
This probably won't happen because Blizzard won't even add a buff icon for the Wizard Familiar skill because they want to keep the interface as little clogged up as possible (so it doesn't get to WoW standards). If they should do anything, they should imo just create casting animations but in my opinion it's not needed.
Tie temporary icons to a selection box planed against the floor to save space and keep things tidy. Handy for debuffs too.
They could make the cast bars only show if you have nameplates and/or health totals displaying so theres only clutter if you have clutter enabled in the first place.
