Unless you are running D2 as an admin your saves are going to be in the Virtual Folders. MS did this for Win7/vista to keep compatibility with older programs while keeping you from modifying the actual Program Files folder without proper permission.

The folder where your saves are going to be is listed below. Enable hidden files/folders and probably 'show system files' as well to see the folder. If you need help with that I will give you directions. Just please tell me if you have win7 or vista. It probably is not much different though.

Change Panos to what ever you use to log into Windows with.
    C:\Users\Panos\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Diablo II\save

Only the ''Save'' file? The size of it seems very small! Then when? Copy it where after format and install of the game?
    I have Vista.

In order to make sure you have the right files, if you have ATMA or GoMule try opening them and see if they are the most current ones. If they are then I would make a backup of the entire save folder, as well as any stashes you have from ATMA/GoMule. Then after your format and reinstall of the game and windows. Drag and drop the save folder into the virtual folder in the same place if you used the same user name. Drag and drop the stashes back into your ATMA/GoMule folder or where ever they were saved originally.

If you want to keep a copy of your progress in case something happens to your hard drive there are many options to you. Most of the free ones are not automated, so you will have to remember to do it every now and then. I do not play anymore, but if I wanted to keep it safe as possible I'd make a zip of the save folder copy my stashes to the zip as well. Append the date to the file so I know by glancing at the name when it was saved. Then I'd copy the backup zip to a USB storage device or thumbdrive and/or upload it to a free cloud service. To be extra safe keep two copies one in the cloud and another on the USB storage, this is what I'd call belt with suspenders backup and not required in most cases. Hope this was not confusing.
