Re: Is Life Regeneration instead of LoH viable?

It works exceptionally well with seismic slam barb (so you stay ranged most of the time, not taking damage too rapidly, or a burst damage leap/ignore pain barb, which jumps into monsters deals damage, and then moves back to wait few seconds for cooldowns and replenish life).
Life regeneration is good synergy with high resist/armor, making each of your health points more valuable. A character for example with 40k hp, and 2k life regen, feels much better to play than character with much higher healh (thus effective hp), for example 60-70k, but no regen.

I think both are useful really and they complement another. I know that in my case it helped me a lot. I have around 1800 lps which is decent. My LOH is pretty low around 300, which will remain that way till I can get something better.

Re: Is Life Regeneration instead of LoH viable?

I noticed an interested ploy when I met a barbarian with 100k hp.

He used the Inspiring Presence passive skill, the one that heals you for every second and ups the duration of your shouts. Using War Cry with Impunity you get All Resist and Defense, and with Inspiring Presence, his LPS was over 5k because of the insanely high HP.

Right now I have 61k and 1500 LPS. It works great for white mobs and seems to help out a lot even when fighting elites. I would like to have more LoH, but currently I'm only up to 152.

Also higher VIT = more armor with that one passive skill that adds 100% vit to armor, as well as more HP. More HP = more hp gained from Revenge, Furious Charge with Dreadnought rune, and of course Inspiring Presence.

That barb, in himself, was a true inspiring presence. (Just don't forget to stack All Resist and as much Defense as you can. Looking for Life % gear and Radiant Star Amethysts help as well).

Actually LPS is kind of pointless to measure (but it is easy, you just have to look at character details). One should instead look at effective life healed per second. A barb with 100k but low resist and armor using inspiring presence might actually have lower effective life heal per second than a barb with 40k and high resist and armor using inspiring presence. A lot of people seem to be under the misconception that the only way to increase the health gained by skills such as revenge, inspiring presence etc is to have a higher max hp. But resists and armor also make revenge's life steal more effective since every life point gained will be worth more. It is almost always better to have a low life pool with high mitigation than the other way around.

Also I don't think inspiring presence is all that great for regen. You lose very important passive slot (that could be a damage boost), and for 100k health barbarian, it only adds 1k life regen. Only, because it isn't really all that much, compared to items, such high end barbarian must possess at that point (given very high stats).
I get that it is good, if someone wants to really stack life regen, and reach maximum value, but for high health barb, skills that heal % of max life shine, while life regen, life on hit and even life steal not. Inspiring presence is of course %life based, but very low amount.
If I ever reach health this high, I'd definitely stick to pound of flesh, that makes nearly all globes heal you to full instantly, regardless how large your health pool is.

Generally, same ehp but obtained via resists/armor is always better than ehp boosted by high hit points, because %life healing skill heal same % in both cases, but skills that heal flat amount of life, have harder time to heal up to full health, barb with very high hit points.

I agree that actual health pool is not a very important stat unless you are worried about getting one-shot by burst damage (Like all of those mace dudes hitting you at once). When I started really being able to do act 1 on my barb without dying, I was sitting at 50k HP. I can now comfortably do act 2 without dying, and I am at 30k HP (And 2k Life Per Second).
