How much does even a point of physical resist reduce? in a percentage sense, like that of armor.
So i'll know what to shoot for since im a melee-build wiz.
if resists, %DR = x/(x + 300)
if armor, %DR = x/(x + 3000)
3 resist = 30 armor = +1% effective health
however prismatic increases armor more then resists. So armor is little better that way.
I agree and i don't like it as well. Hopefully 1.04 will come in a month or so and we will actually gonna see some diversity like it was intended :/Perhaps its not overpowered given that you need to actually invest resources into this build, but I think it's still an internal balance issue. Some passives add on a small bonus to the power boost from your gear, other passives multiply with it into the absurd.
I've been experimenting with this today, using Meteor (Star Pact).
With 18 AP on crit and 27% crit chance I can cast it pretty much constantly if there are at least 2 enemies (with 1.43 APS). Frost Nova and Diamond Skin come up often enough to be useful, but not quite the same 'always up' feel you get with Wicked Wind.
So I think Wicked Wind is definitely better from a defensive standpoint, but it just doesn't do enough damage. Or, more to the point, burst damage. It's also not nearly as fun to use as meteor IMO.
Definitely gonna start replacing some gear to get better crit chance. Might replace my helm with one that gives AP on crit too, can't really tell how necessary that is yet.
Is anyone else still using Star Pact?
I want to start using star pact, but I don't have any AP-on-crit so it is pretty balls for me. Wicked wind I can get away with not having AP-on-crit.
I have an inferno build that I never intended on going but it's actually the best build I've come up with for the gear that I have:
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#WkhXSO!gTa!Yacacc
Key points:
I have enough armor that with energy armor I reduce damage by 67% (70% with enchantress)
I have enough resist all with prismatic armor that I further reduce all damage by 70% or more depending on which resistance I have
I have a 28.5% crit rate with +144% damage on crit. My damage w/ magic weapon is 27k (31.5% crit rate w/ scoundrel)
I have +9 AP on crit
I have a 923.1 DPS 1.2 weapon speed weapon, and the only IAS i have is 4% on my amulet. I have an ilvl 61 shield with a lot of int, +12% life and +crit rate
Cast a meteor on where you plan on engaging the target(s). Move on in, cast both Explosive blast and diamond skin. Cast spectral blades a lot - Crits will heal you, give you AP back, and reduce the cooldown of both explosive blast and diamond skin. When you have full AP again (which should be about every 3-5 seconds depending on how many targets are around to trigger crits) cast another meteor on yourself - easy to aim because you know where the target will be - in melee with you.
The more targets that surround you the better, because you crit more, increasing your damage output (by doing more explosive blasts and getting ap back for more meteors) and defense(by getting diamond skin back). Sometime battles, I was even able to recast diamond skin 1 second after I cast it originally. Overall this build synergizes very well, because you're always stacking meteors with explosive blasts and spectral blades, all of which increases my mere 27k character sheet damage to much higher because all 3 of my attack skills are being used at pretty much the same time instead of in lieu of another.
This build with this gear eats act 1 inferno for breakfast. I don't die in act 1 inferno even when i get chain-crowd controlled. I can even take a 4 player act 1 inferno game with this build because it mitigates all the damage coming in. I killed Belial in inferno with it pretty easily under the 3 minutes before the enrage timer starts, but my gear is too low for being able to take on act 3 with this build. Some parts of act 2 though (damn wasps), are just not good for this build, and in multiplayer games this build just can't tank act 2 for that long - it needs to kill the targets quickly to survive.
There's a lot of synergy with this build that makes it work, and it's heavily gear dependent - especially on the defense to be able to mitigate a lot of the incoming damage. I messed around with a few things like liquefy for meteor, obliterate with explosive blast and the like but this seems to be the most well rounded variation of the build in actual practice that I've liked.
I picked up cheap junky ap-on-crit gear (couple mil total for hat weapon offhand, 27 ap on crit), and went wicked wind build. I proceeded to tank all of a3, and then all of a4 without much trouble. I died a few times, mostly to frozen/arcane stuff. A total of 2 elite packs were skipped, one in a3 (frozen vortex arcane jailer camping the zone down to level 2 of one of the caves), and one in a4 (morlu incinerators with lots of ground poop mods). Everything else I killed.
the build:
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...XYO!abg!YZcacY
Yeah, force armor. My gear is a little glassy, 19k hp 500 res all, 6.4k armor. Still, it was enough.
My wrists are starting to ache from the spammy nature of this build. I know a lot of people use g15 macros to save their wrists, but I don't have a g15. Are there other good (warden friendly) solutions out there?
Yes yes these kinds of builds are definitely painful (and I that's with a steelseries 6gv2 which makes clicking much more pleasant than with most keyboards, especially when spamming). I've been suing AutoHotkey for other games (though for different situations, not for spamming, but then again I'm pretty sure you can use it to spam with the right script). According to the TOS I don't think it would be considered "OK" to use it in D3, since you're basically using 1 click for multiple key inputs which AFAIK is officially not allowed. Whether it'll get caught or not I don't know...
What I do wonder is whether this can actually farm faster than a simple archon build:
http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...jSO!YaX!aZcaZc
Basically without AP on crit I couldn't find a critical mass build variant that would allow me to kill act 2 elites any faster than the above archon build, but was wondering if AP on crit would make the critical mass builds beat the killing speed of archon. I don't farm act 3 at the moment because it seems like the need to increase my survivability reduces my killing speed so that I clear at less than 1/2 speed of act 2, which means I get more ilvl63s over time by farming act 2 anyway. However, if I can get this build to do at least equal damage to the archon build AND actually survive with it in act 3 it could double my farming rate... Even doing a bit less can still increase the farming rate, because running between elite packs takes time regardless of whether you're farming normal or act 3/4 inferno, but it's only relevant if you're killing the elites relatively fast.
I currently have (all unbuffed): 54.7k DPS, 25k hp, 670~740 resists and 3.3k armor, of buffed: 67.5k dps, 970~1072 resists and 5.7k armor. Elite packs in act 2 in most cases take 5-15 seconds to kill.
Also, while I could replace my offhand with something of equal/better damage with a 10-20mil investment, replacing the helm will probably require a similar/higher investment in addition to a significant loss of stats, since my helm is pretty amazing (156 int, 4.5% crit, 79 resist and 300 life/sec). Since getting 10-20mil is at least a couple of days of farming I don't want to spend that just to experiment...
Just a quick side note, though: When you play in a team with multiple wizards this build becomes that much stronger. Multiple frost nova spammers is just so much better than one. Even 2 wizards can get some serious stun locking going on. Nova seems to even freeze shielded elites (or is it just my imagination?)...
I just tried a very similar build, but with Mirror Images (Mirror Mimics) instead of Teleport.
Amazingly, with the Mirror Mimics rune, and if you set Frost Nova as a left or right click skill, they too join in the fun with freezing enemies.
I feel like I just broke the game with the amount of stunlock.
The only downside to the build is that it sucks for killing treasure goblins since they can't be frozen, and twisters absolutely suck for killing them.
