Obviously there's a LOT less volume in the HC AH, but for the **** of me I can't figure out what should sell, what should sell expensively, and what's really junk.
I'm guessing there's a about three-four different types of HC players on the AH:
A. Really smart ones looking for a deal - don't even bother trying to make money off of them.
B. Players who have been farming NM/Hell/Inferno for a while and have oodles of cash or at least know how/where to go farm some.
C. Players with cash problems in Normal/NM/Hell.
D. Players just starting out.
Personally I'm just about making the move from D to C, so I generally look for <Main Stat> + Vitality + Gold Find on gear, with Sockets able to sub for a Main Stat or Vitality. I also look for pure Intelligence/Strength/Dexterity gear for any Enchantress/Templar/Scoundrel, esp. early Strength gear to kit out the Templar that each of my non-main 4 lowbie characters will start with.
But stuff with GF doesn't seem to sell - are people just looking for pure Int/Dex/Str gear? And what about 2H weapons or class-specific weapons/armor - is it just the DPS that really matters (plus the main Int/Dex/Str stat now that IAS was nerfed)?
Feel free to post your strategy.
In leveling gear, these are basically the stats that seem to matter:
Weapons: DPS > Has Sockets > Vitality > Str/Dex/Int > Experience
Non Weapons*: Vitality > Str/Dex/Int > Experience > Has Sockets
*For Helms, Has Sockets becomes much more important, obviously
It could be that GF & MF matter, and I just don't care about them enough to pay attention. They honestly mean about as much to me as Thorns. I find Increased Pickup Radius considerably more important for leveling than GF... but then, I only really notice Pickup Radius when I accidentally remove my last piece of gear that had it.
My most successful strategy was to mass buy a couple rings/amulets in NM act 1 in the first couple weeks, then sell them for a good profit. I'm not sure how successful that would be anymore, but I'm guessing you could still make a profit doing it... just might take a while to shop the right item.
Increased pickup radius is the bane of my existence. I got it on a piece of armor because the other stats were too good to pass up, but I will replace it as soon as I can.
I like to leave health globes behind so I can pick them up if needed when kiting bad packs. Unless I am in a wide open space, increased pickup radius makes it almost impossible to leave globes on the ground as I progress. I hate it.
Res all + Vit / Prime stat is probably the basis for a major chunk of the upper end market. When I say upper end I mean inferno progression. Other stat building on Res all + stat seems to be the starting point for many players, say crit on gloves, sockets, life %, mf, armor, life on hit, damage reduced ...etc. Of course I can't possibly cover all the combination and things people sought after in a few sentence.
GF I don't believe is all that popular at the upper end (maybe for the mid to mid-upper?), whereas MF (on top of good stats!) seems to be quite popular and sell for a chunk, probably due to the fact that a good find in inferno can net you 7 digits, and 100k-500k items are not too hard to find. Though the 1.03 patch may shake that up I don't know, still selling good mf piece for quite a bit so far.
Rolling good vendor blues for profit is tougher nowadays (was great earlier on) due to competition, but still if you find holes in the AH it can plug they can serve as a side income stream, I find them to be mostly low efficiency use of AH slot though unless you score a very top end vendor blue. I've stopped using vendor blue awhile ago since I'm at the point of finding truckloads of 50-200k rare items that my AH slot can't possibly keep up with, sometimes I'm forced to create time consuming trade threads or even breaking down 25-50k pieces for space lol, which is a shame as a lot of it would be useful to players having trouble in hardcore.
Looks like to sell a weapon your first have to find out where it's going to show up when other players search for <weapon of their choice> and rank it by DPS.
That requires knowing what each class favours and when they do so, which requires playing each class, more or less. Here's my understanding of it, please correct me if I'm wrong as you can dramatically help me keep my cash flow reasonable:
- Barbarians generally prefer 1H weapon with high DPS, obviously Inferno where few go without a shield, but while leveling (up through NM in HC mode?) many go dual-wielding or big 2H. Plus a socket and Strength/Vitality/Other.
- Monks generally the same (substitute Dexterity, duh)?
- Daemon Hunters (Games Workshop/40K spelling is cooler) generally go with Bows due to the currently OP Archery talent, so any Crossbow will be slightly less valued. Dual-wielding DH's are rare, so 1H Crossbows don't sell much? Late game DH's don't use Shields much, either, afaik. Sockets are a huge boost, usually.
- Witch Doctors and Wizards use any big-dps 2H with Int, Vitality while leveling? Sources and the WD-equivalents are a pain in the *** to sell and search for, as they're hard to rank in terms of dps contribution still (though 1.03 made that easier?). Sockets are a huge boost, usually.
- Templars use straight-up DPS 1H + Shield with sockets and Strength. Everyone starts off with the Templar, meaning Level 10-20 1H+Shield gear with pure Strength and Sockets have a higher demand and market volume.
- Scoundrels use Bows and Crossbows with DPS > sockets/Dexterity. Not much else really matters, some "Chance to cast" effects are nice but rarely make a huge difference.
- Enchantresses use big-DPS 2H axes, maces, staffs, swords (the 1H versions are lower dps, and not much need for a shield afaik) with Intelligence. Chance to cast is nice but not important. Searching for weapons for her can be a pain as using the AH menu options <Wizard + 2H weapon> just brings up a lot of very high-DPS Bows and Crossbows, which she can't use.
I'm not sure that WDs use big 2H weapons. At least I don't.
Some Wizards like 2H because:
- They spend their AP more efficiently
- APS doesn't help the DPS of some of their more popular skills
Neither of these points (which are kind of just the same point) really applies to VQ or Splinters.
I used a 2h weap for a good while leveling my WD, but only because 1h weapons + shield/mojo were substantially more expensive. Seems virtually no one in HC likes using 2h weaps, so they're generally pathetically cheap.
I'm not sure when the economy will normalize, but I can't imagine people are making much on the AH outside of extremely rare and lucky drops. I've been trying to sell a few items I used coming up for what I'd consider low prices - 25k, 50k - and getting zero interest. I can only imagine how long people are waiting to sell their 12M gold 700dps blue weapon.
I kinda wish they'd implement at 10% of buyout fee for AH listings, refundable if the item sells. Give people a reason to sell things at a reasonable cost.
I'm saying a 2h weap is a cheap option for WD's and Wizards while leveling, since far too many people ask absurd amounts of gold for leveling items. 75,000g is stupid for a level 35 mace.
Once you get to level 60-63 items, the cost skyrockets, and I assume people watch as their overpriced auctions time out. If I can't sell pretty good gear at under 100k gold, can only imagine how the folks listing stuff for 10m+ are doing.
I usually just sell stuff for 5K or less just to acumalate gold in the AH, but Ive been taking some others advise and starting to up my prices a bit.... Someone is always looking for something and a cheap deal will sell faster than a way over priced item , like the ones I see all the time. Ive been able to keep around 3-4 hundered K in my stash since a few days after the lauch. I havent been buying way over priced Elites and stuff for Inferno yet though so that could change my ideals....
