Question Price of Flawless to Flawless Square Gems to Tank/Plunge/Crash further in 1.03?

Could never sell a single one of them even at 100gold each piece. So keep them or vendor them off?

Keep them, you never know when you'll pick up those jeweller recipes.

I managed to sell the last of my emeralds yesterday at a much lower price, the rest are unsellable.

1.03 will actually make them more useful, as the jeweler cost of combining them will be reduced to a trivial amount.

That said, yes, they will still crash, but primarily because of the Tome of Jewelcrafting.

My opinion is still that anything worth under 1000g is trivial. It's not worth the time to list them for sale, since you could just kick one more vase in Inferno and get that much gold. Rather than sell your flawless square gems for nothing either don't pick them up, or stash them for a future patch.

The price for combining up through Flawless Squares will be reduced to nothing, but the price for combining Flawless to Perfect Squares and beyond is still the same.

But I think the following factors will cause gems to eventually become worth a bit more:

    1. Gem patterns will be more available, so people can finally move beyond Star and will have a use for the gems they pick up.

    2. Higher level players who aren't finding many real upgrades on the AH anymore will spend their gold on min/maxing gems

    3. PVP will lead to increased min/maxing pressure.

the 1000g is trivial isn't true because A. you can sell a stack at a time, and B. you can cancel the auction anytime so it doens't actually take up your slots.

That's my original, launch-day argument for selling gems. But now that we can cancel equipment auctions whenever we want, the importance is less.

Right before the servers went down this morning for 1.0.3 the prices of t8 (flawless square) gems was as follows: Emerald = 1100, Amethyst = 200, Topaz = 150, Ruby = 100. (My prices aren't the listed "last 10 trades" price anymore. Now my procedure is to buy a stack of 30 and check the refund. This tells me the true price of a commodity.)

Those prices are sad. And it will get worse when the servers come back up and everyone cashes in those old square gems and ToJs that I talked about last week. But I don't know how it can get worse. You can vendor some normal mode blue items for 100g. How can a late Hell gem (t8 - the highest that can drop) be worth vendoring a level 25 blue item? Clearly the population isn't using gems. They're not even worth picking up unless they're emeralds, and even then just barely. The gem prices just a few days ago were 4100 / 900 / 700 / 500.

This is strange, but I recommend buying any t8 gem at 100g. There's no way that the developers will let gems stay useless forever this young into D3's life. Some patch will surely change the circumstances. Normally I wouldn't advise speculating on a *commodity* of all things. That's just not sound, since tons more will be created. But the prices are so low that you really can't lose money. Buying all 729 gems that you'd need for a t14 gem, right now, would cost: 800k / 146k / 110k / 73k. Imagine 3 horizontal rows of your stash full of 30x t8 gems. That's a major time investment and it's easily worth 70k - 100k. Or think of it this way: since the ToS increased from 300 -> 700+, you're now spending more on the tomes than you are on the gems. It takes 174 tomes to make a t12 gem and that costs 122k now.
