    Critical hit chance and DPS

I just found out that critical hit chance increases base dps. I thought critical hit was a random roll. Is the DPS number really that squishy? Whats going on here?

Re: Critical hit chance and DPS

DPS is a measure of the average amount of damage you are going to deal over time. In order for your DPS to give a credible value, it has to include variables such as crit rate and crit damage.

Example: 1 attack per second, 100 damage per hit, 0% crit chance. 10 seconds = 1000 damage = 100 DPS
Example: 1 attack per second, 100 damage per hit, 10% crit chance, 100% crit damage. 10 seconds = 1100 damage = 110 DPS

Base DPS * (Crit Chance +1) * (Crit Damage) = Final DPS
    100 * 1.1 * 1 = 110

Thank you, that cleared it up. Btw, I discovered this when choosing the Sharpshooter passive DH skill and watched the dps number tick up. Another interesting variable to account for when calculating damage.

Crit damage is always more damage, so 50% crit damage shouldn't decrease your dps. 50% crit damage is the minimum.

Does crit chance/dmg increase dmg of DoTs? (i.e. does it deal dmg based on total dps after calculating crit/ias bonus?)

I don't know if it works for all DoTs but at least DH's Caltrops (with Jagged Spikes rune) deals damage based on the "damage" number displayed on your character sheet. This means that if you let Sharpshooter to raise your crit chance to 100%, your Caltrops traps deal a lot more damage. And the best part is that this doesn't trigger Sharpshooter to reset.

The way I understand is that as DoT's are based on your dps they are also affected by crit and crit dmg, since both values are considered when the game creates your DPS stat.

should be: Base DPS * (Crit Chance*Crit Damage +1) = Final DPS
otherwise a 0% crit damage (which is impossible in game) would result in 0 damage, instead of the Base DPS it should have been.

Re: Critical hit chance and DPS

Yeah the formula should be (crit damage + 1) because 50% crit damage means you deal 50% more than a normal hit which is 100% for a total of 150% damage. For example if your crit damage is 240% it really means you are dealing 340% damage so your normal hits are multiplied by 3.4, not 2.4. I don't like how the value is shown in game because I can see how some people could get confused.

Re: Critical hit chance and DPS

The simple fact that your character sheet displays "dps", damage-per-second, shows how incredibly out to lunch Blizzard is on this issue and how misguiding that displayed value can be for players who don't stop and think for a moment when choosing gear. Your actual Damage-Per-Second is actually based on the skills you use and the play-style that a given situation dictates, not through some formula. A more accurate reading would be WDP, Weapon-Damage-Potential.
