which is one reason I don't like the p-word. I don't like saying it. I feel gross and I think it's tasteless. No, I'm not going to preach to anyone who has ever called another person a p-word, however... If you kind of think about it, even just a little, it is a little offensive because women do have them and we're also the "weaker sex" and when you call someone that, it's pretty much calling them a woman.

Maybe they should, falling for such a stunt. The bill in question was about ensuring abortion mill cleanliness and making sure that women weren't being pressured into an abortion they didn't want. Well, Rush called Sandra Fluke a slut, irregardless of the truth of said statement (I'm not arguing that here), that's an insult. I'll even allow that "swear word" was not the best term, since I think slut is one of those words your mom yells at you for saying, whereas vagina is the medically appropriate term, and while it can be used as an insult, so apparently can nearly any word. "Slut" has no appropriate use in mixed company.

I don't think you can say she was using the term as an insult, since she was referring to her own parts.

Either way, while i don't think she should be in trouble, the arguement was still barely coherent, and poorly delivered. Don't congresscritters make speeches for a living? I guess if they made too much sense we would understand what they're saying and we might not vote for them.....

Slut is a more serious kind of insult than derogatory metaphors. It's not metaphorous, but a plain description of a certain kind of person. Calling somebody a slut is a kind of insult which can have legal consequences if it's not true while a-hole or so are just expressions of personal antipathy with an intent to hurt.

Of course, the best insults are the ambiguous ones, to let the target choose which kind of insult he wants to take offense on or decide for a harmless interpretation and pretend as if there isn't a potentially insulting meaning while the audience is both curious and amused about the situation and his decision.

I'll not argue the Rush incident either; he should have seen the fake backlash coming and not used the routine. That's surreal - what legal consequences? I'm all but certain that's not legitimate under U.S. law; it's a common enough slur, and it's not even gender-specific.

If you cause damage to somebody through a lie, you can be sued, but that's a matter for a civil lawsuit.

Insulting people in a too severe manner can have legal consequences, at least here. People have dignity, so you cannot humiliate them as you like, not even with mere words. It's in the frst paragraph of our constitution, one of the few (two?) paragraphs which is regarded as unchangable (legally) by saying that the dignity of a human is untouchable.

That doesn't mean that the US is wrong with putting more emphasis on freedom of speech.
