Hi everyone! I played a ton of D2 back in the day (exclusively SP) and have been on this forum basically whenever I used to play. With D3 out now, I decided what better time to get back into LoD? So I have a necromancer in Hell right now, I want to beat Baal then start doing some serious MFing for my other characters (unfortunately I don't have nay of my old stuff from when I played before). It's good to see the forums are still fairly active!
As far as accumulating a stash of socketed items for making runewords, I've looked a bit but haven't found any concise guides on what base items/sockets to look/keep for while questing. I know some basics of what are good (e.g. I found a 6 os eth Colossus blade for my eventual BotD, and I should hang onto 3os dusk shrouds/whatever for enigma, 5os (eth) polearms for honor, 3os (eth) poles for crescent moon...), but I'm looking for a nice quick rundown like Kronos did for charms as far as what's valuable and what to keep. Also, for which runewords should I look for ethereal bases? BotD and Merc weapons are obvious, are there any others?
Thanks for any help you can toss my way! I haven't played too many characters all the way through Hell before so I've never quite accumulated a ton of wealth, and hence have never looked too carefully at runewords/bases. Any other things I should know about finding bases? e.g. some items can get sockets rolled via Cube, so I don't need to worry about finding/hanging onto those items before I find the runes(?) Is that a valid/convenient method?
Oh you'll definitely want to hold onto the bases before you find the runes. The cube recipe sockets a random amount with the maximum dependent on the ilvl. Nothing drives a man crazier than not having a base for infinity but sitting on those bers he worked so hard to get :P
There are lots of bases people like. My advice would be to keep all elite polearm class white items, as 4 and 5 socketed ones are people's favourites, as far as I know (for obedience, infinity and insight, especially). I would also keep all crystal sword/phase blade drops and even flails, too. Obviously you can ditch the one socketed ones, but there are some useful recipes such as spirit (again, 4 sockets) and Grief and even more budget items like Strength in a flail or HOTO in a flail.
so, to summarise my experience: Just keep everything you think might be useful later. Use the cube recipe to socket the items (unless you want to use Larzuk for a guaranteed max socket item) and keep the ones that are good for useful runewords. If you don't know if they're useful or not, hold onto them until you do :P
I just have a separate stash for socketed/white items (ethereal "white" items are important to keep, too).
Quick rundown:
4os, 5os and plain eth polearms ( plains can be cube socketed )- for insight, infinty, obedience
All types of phase blades ( lots of rws can be made here )
5os- grief, 4os - passion, 3os- crescent moon, etc.
Light armors with high def rolls , 3os, 4os
3os- treachery, 4os- fortitude, etc.
eth high def armors for cube ebugging ( merc armor )
eth bases for 'Oath' , 'Death', and 'Botd' ( hey you could make it some day )- 4os balrog blade , 6os war pike, 5os colossus sword etc. Plains that get reqd sockets with Larzuks is good too.
Berserker axes- can be cube socketed. 5os- grief, beast, doom, etc.
Note about eth weapons- if you want 1.07 stuff, don't pick these up
All types of assassin claws- look for staffmods , LS,DS, venom
+3 skill amazon bows and spears.
4os superior elite bows
'white' wand bases - staffmods bone spirit bone spear poison nova decrepify lower resist revive

WB!
*kicks shins*
You should also add Monarchs to the list. Mostly plain and 4os (spirit). And all pally shields with high res.
Welcome back, and good luck with the rune hunt!
Oh dear, I forgot to put on my shinguards before introducing myself...
Thanks for everyone's help! Zaphod's post in particular was exactly what I was looking for.
What is the cube ethereal armor bug? (I remember something like that but don't know the specifics, something to get super high defense or something)
Using the socket recipe on an unsocketed ethereal armor. Will cause the ethereal bonus to be applied twice.
I'd add that a good light 2os armor and 2os Heater (or high staff resists Crown Shield) are good bases for Smoke and Rhyme, and a 5os Yari would be my top pick for a merc Honor base (just as I would say a 5os Divine Scepter is the best Honor base for a melee character). This would be for character development, obviously.
Oh yes I forgot about spirit monarchs ( 4os/plain monarch )
There's also a few exotic bases I'll mention for completeness sake
4os/plain 40+ res eth pally shield ( 'Exile' base )
4os/plain +3 Energy shield staff ( 'Memory' base )
Druid helm with +3 tornado ( 'Delirium' base )
Necro shield with +3 RS +3 SM ( 'Splendor' base for summoning )
Crystal swords - generic base for some RWs like 'Call to arms' because of low requirement
4os flail- 'Heart of the oak' base
For the Druid helm, is there a particular reason I'm looking for +3 tornado? Same question about +3 ES on the staff, but there I guess it's just so I can have a super high level ES for precasting?
For Items with staffmods/inherent bonuses (e.g. +resists on pally shield) I have to use a larzuk socket? If I use the cube to socket it it rerolls the item, correct?
