    Non-Melee Monk

    Greetings All,

Been playing around A3 Inferno and manage to play around with an interesting build where I was able to kill Ghom (but took about 20mins) to kill, without even touching him via melee.

    Build: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...gjY!aTg!cbcYbc

    My Stats: http://i.imgur.com/Z3Ajt.jpg

What it looks like when kiting him with wothf: http://i.imgur.com/hiBoq.jpg

    Using wave of light: http://i.imgur.com/AAv8z.jpg

The idea is to essentially hold shift+click wothf-wf and use that as your main generator from range and use wave of light when you have enough energy to dash out.

All it requires is a lot of IAS and proper usage of CDs for most burst damage when needed.

I'm quite confident this can be a viable build if I had much better gear/stats.

Feel free to try it out yourself and have some fun!

    Cheers.

I honestly find the idea intruiging ... I read about a monk yesterday who finished (solod) Inferno he used a Daibo doing that ( i know shocking) he had like 70 k hp 40 k dps ; like 400 all resist barely any LOH or Lifereg.

If i were you I'd consider a 2h Weapon , if your sentiment is not being hit in the first place why bother with a shield ? ; dual wield could also work fine ; If you can afford it ; I will give it a whirl in the future.

and if it is only to try something new once in while...

I tried this a bit in act 2 inferno but it didn't really work for me. The monk just doesn't have good kiting skills to keep distance between the monsters and you.

Of course my gear was not that good then either.

With 12% FRW on boots, 10% from the passive, and even 5% from the Mantra of Evasion rune it should be easier. Secondly Wave of Light is just a pretty bad skill in general; for ranged, LTK-Spinning Flame or LTK-Ytar are better choices. Especially Ytar if you really want to kite things.

I played a bit with this kind of build and it really can be viable build but requires some specific gear choices (mostly spirit regen items).
Ive few notes to your build:

    1.
Wave of Light (WoL) is probably worst monks ranged skill because it deals only 45% weapon damage with its ranged counterpart and cost at least 40 spirit to cast. You would do a lot better using Lashing Tail Kick(LTK) with either Spinning Flame Kick rune (it has shorter range than WoL but does 240% weapon damage and still have knockback) or LTK with Hand of Ytar which has screen range deals 200% weapon dmg and slows mobs by ! 80% (doesnt have knockback thou).

    2.
You lack movement skill either Fists of Thunder(FoT) with Thunderclap or Dashing Strike(DS) with Quicksilver. If you were melee build you could get away with it but as you are trying to be ranged any jailer pack would destroy you because your only escape would be popping Serenity which have too long cooldown.

    3.
Serenity and Near Death Experience(NDE) are currently bugged (NDE is triggered while Serenity is active and most of the time you activate Serenity in situations NDE would proc) and taking them both is impractical.

    4.
Blinding Flash(BF) with Faith in the Light is tremendous skill unfortunately completely wasted in case of ranged build any other rune would provide more benefit to ranged monk or even using Inner Sanctuary with Consecration rune would be better choice.

    5.
Combination Strike is wasted passive if used only with 1 Spirit generating skill (Sgs)

On gear part I would seek for certain affixes and compensate with skills if I couldnt find them:
Spirit Per Second (if not take Mantra of Healing with Circular Breathing + Chant of Resonance passive)
Life per Spirit Spent (if not take Transcendence passive)
Movement Speed (if not keep Fleet Footed)
Items with All Resistance + Resistance of choice and taking One with Everything because things will hit you.
If you could get all of above I would take Exalted Soul passive to increase your spirit pool.

As for skills I would trade either of BoH BF or Mystic Ally for FoT#Thunderclap or DS#Quicksilver

Taking FoT#Thunderclap can serve 2 purposes first to teleport/break jails and run away from mobs second to mitigate your lack of ias and make 2 first strikes with FoT and then making 3rd strike with WotHF#Windforce Flurry increases your fire ratio and requires less standing still (especially at 2nd strike) before launching your railgun :D.

DS#Quicksilver with enough spirit per second is spamable and
    without target:
it allows you to make short dash which will
    free you from jails
allow you to dodge Dark Berserkers slam/run out of fire/plague/desecration while slowed
allow you to pass trough openable bar gates
    With target:
allow you to ignore mob collision and move you directly behind mobs that block your way
in many cases get you out of walls

I hadn't tried getting good movement speed, that's important I suppose. It's not a star I had worried about very much with my monk in the past.

I used ltk on mine as well, wol is just an awful skill in general.

Yeah. WoL needs help. Increased damage is needed to come close to LTK's Damage/spirit ratio. Either that or buff the damage a little and bring it down to 50 spirit/20 spirit with rune.

I used almost the same tactic, but instead of wothf I used DR#Foresight. I just kept my distance and made sure my earth ally was up at all times, while I bursted out some dmg with DR now and then. It wasn't a quick kill, but on the other hand, it didn't take 20mins either

    Re: Non-Melee Monk

Since I'm not lvl 60 yet, maybe someone else can try my version on the ranged monk.
    http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...gjQ!bYc!cccYcZ

The key to this build is Lashing tail kick - Hand of ytar. With this spec, it will give you 200% dmg, 80% slow, and 1860 hp per strike.

I requires some specific gear though, namely spirit generation gear.

My monk is at lvl 41 now and have more than 10 spirit/second in passive generation right now.

    Chant of resonance: 2 spirit/s
Mantra of healing - Circular Breathing: 3 spirit/s
    Weapons: 3.4 spirit/s
    Head: 1.8 spirit/s

    Total: 10.2 spirit/s

With lvl 60 gear, you should be able to get at least 3 spirit more per second for around 13 in total.

With Exalted Soul you'll have a spirit pool of 250. This means that if you use Hand of Ytar once per second, you can perform it 13 times before running out of spirit. Using it 13 times will give you 24000 hp with Transcendence. I hope that, together with 80% slow, will make LTK - HoY an awesome kiting skill.

If someone wants to try it out, plz do so.

It might require some pretty defensive gear to survive though, and faster run speed on boots is a must have. The templar is also a must have also because of his passive spirit generation increase.
