I found a bow that literally doubled my dps from 80 to 160 in the shop in act 3 nightmare. Mostly they sell rubbish, every now and again something comes along that makes it worth looking at them closely. I don't use the auction house, finding anything useful is always problematic for me.
You're in a public game and one of the other players links a super juicy bow you would love to own. You do the right thing, realizing it's value, and offer him some coinage. He trades. Nothing wrong w that eh? Or maybe your buddy whispers you as you log in to join his game and he tosses you a similar aforementioned type bow he nabbed on a Whimsy run. Cool eh? The auction house is no different. Really, it isn't. Put your price in there, buy yourself a decent bow, rejoice. When you're finished w it just sell it and recoup a bit of your money. Winner all round.
the AH makes everything so much easier
I still haven't figured out if that's a good thing or a bad thing
this is only 5 000 gold

the chance to stun is pretty useful
I don't know why ppl make such a huge deal about the AH. It's just a streamlined trade medium. Who would rather sit in a trade channel blabbing endless lists of crap they're looking for every time they want to buy something? Not me. Think of the AH as human vendors vs. npc vendors. You get what you're looking for that way.
If I were playing untwinked, I would avoid the Action House. However, this time I'm avoiding the AH not because I dislike it or am boycotting it, but simply because my Demon Hunter is my side character - my Wizard is my main character that I play alongside my girlfriend's character - and I do not want to invest gold for this character. I really only play the DH when my girlfriend isn't able to play with me, which is once in a while due to our work schedules.
I did play untwinked characters in Diablo 2 for an extended period of time in Diablo 2, which was awesome and fun. During that time, I didn't take any items from or trade items with other people, and didn't even pass items between my own characters.
