It would be interesting to see that unattainable build with dream gear, to know what the ultimate piece of equipment is and to see how big the variety is for different wizard builds. In D2 different builds for a sorc could use completely different gear, is it to some extent similar in D3, or is all gear just max int,res all and vit? So if you have the time, please post the stats of the equipment you would put on your uber wizard!
I find this sort of discussion somewhat less interesting in D3 than I did in D2, probably because the best piece for pretty much every slot is a rare, not a legendary or set piece. As blizzard/hydra I pretty much want int / vit / res all / mf on every slot. On slots where available, attack speed also. Highest damage mainhand with int and vit, offhand with high damage, int, vit, MF, and bonus arcane power. Helm should have a socket so I can get a big MF boost from a yellow gem.
weapon should have a socket
Max source is about 100-400 dmg. to find it easier at AH (no filter for damage) skip everything except the skulls
Crit build? For non-crit builds rubies are hardly worth it, better to get a bunch of extra int from that stat. You've got 6 stats to play with, using one on a socket might make sense if you're going to put a green in it with a crit build, but extra int is tons better than the measly damage from a ruby otherwise.
Ideally yes, all items are crit chance/crit damage/int but I don't mean 50% crit builds here (too expensive). Personally I'm not going to get more than 30-35%. It's also not that hard to get 10-20% of crit. Even with that i prefer green gem.
With the current situation at AH where blank 800 dps items cost like 50k but blank 1000 dps costs 3 millions it's pretty easy to find something with not that high dps but with socket and nice stats. Personally, I'm using 750 dps dagger with socket/150int and 250vit
