I need some tips and advice for farming Gold, as I am one of the many users who need to re-gear to prepare for Inferno difficulty: a new weapon (which can range from 1m to tens of millions), armor, and a rockin' shield.
I'm a level 60 Barbarian who's geared decently for Hell, but Inferno Act 2 rocks my socks.
To farm GP, I was trying to hit two birds with one stone by searching for the Gibbering Gemstone in Act 3, build the Nephalem Valor bonus to max stack, gold find, and magic find by taking down Siegebreaker.
I'm extremely poor--I don't even have 1million gold, and cannot even fathom how people have tens or hundreds of millions. It blows my mind.
So I was wondering if any of you had any advice as to what areas or specific bosses I should target. Should I invest in Gold Find % items as well? Should I play with a team, or solo (I usually do it solo)?
I heard about the Goblin exploit in Act II, which I'm sure many people take advantage of...but as I said, I'm quite weak for Act II Inferno and could only do it with a team.
As it is, I hardly ever find anything good or decent to sell in AH, and have yet to find a single Legendary item--and I've been playing since the game's inception upon release.
So as you can tell, I'm feeling quite jaded, left out, and flat out frustrated considering people brag about finding all these Legendary items, etc, and I figured I was doing something wrong. So I decided to try to learn from my mistakes and from other people's successes.
Diablo 3 seems like a game that can make you really feel lost, especially when you play and play and don't get much out of it simply because you're not lucky. But I'm trying to persevere and push on...yet it is getting quite frustrating.
The best way to farm gold is to farm expensive items and sell them. XD You simply can't farm enough gold to make up for the (uncommon but definitely possible) single rare or legendary that sells for over a million gold.
You might try out a few different builds for farming the A2 TG if he isn't patched while they're pushing out 1.02b. An all-offense/burst damage build might help for the occasion, since you usually only have some white mobs to deal with, rarely an easy unique mob, and even more rarely a champion/rare pack. Or get a group together for it! Bunch of people stacking mf and front-loading dps.
If all else fails, go back to farm A1 for a while. :/
Don't worry about not having found a legendary. I've found two (both useless) and I've been playing since release, have one character in A3 inferno, one in hell, two in nightmare, and the last class is at least started if not very far normal. All of them soloed 95% of the time to where they are.
What actually works is playing sessions from wortham to butcher. This has the advantage that the dark berserkers give you the first stack of NV and you'll have 5 when you arrive.
The results usually suck but you get a some items selling for 10k and the occasional 100k item.
I don't think act2 treasure goblins running is that great either since a mf rig costs about the same as semi decent gear.
(The easiest way probably is to power level and play a DH or WIZ instead of a barb)
Put on GF gear and break all of the pots you can see. A good spot to do this is in A1, the royal crypts waypoint. There are hardly any mobs and just quit/restart when you get to the pillars. I make at least 10k a run on inferno and it takes me two minutes. My gf is ~ 220%.

This may be your problem: you want to be a gold farmer, yet you also want to play in Inferno. Getting a good gf set up is very costly. You should probably be either a gold farmer or Inferno runner. Pick one b/c both will cost a fortune.
I've put everything into my one farmer, making no other characters, and I still have a long way to go to optimize my gf. You would want mf too so you can vendor crappy blues and rares. You make more gold killing fast in earlier difficulties than painstakingly chipping away in Inferno with your gf gear which typically lacks any defence. This is b/c you filter the AH for your damage stat, gf, and mf, it's expensive, and anything pickier than that will be even more expensive.
If it's legendaries you want, you can "force" them to drop by killing in lesser difficulties FAST. You get one for every 25-30k monsters killed with just 50ish mf, but they will of course be mid level legendaries. You might want to wait until they are buffed.
I'd say choose Inferno gear if that's your ultimate goal, and the rares you find there will pay off in the end as mentioned. Or, make a true gold farmer, but accept the humbleness of earlier difficulties. If you go with gold farming, here's what I've learned should be your priorities:
1) killing speed (damage)
2) gf (b/c many more gold piles drop than magic items, and the gold piles are often more than what you get for the vendored drops
4) luxuries like movement speed and pick up radius.
Lol. Thanks for the tips guys--I tried posting in the Official D3 forums and it's hard to get an answer sometimes if the post isn't up on the frontpage.
I'll be sure to keep all of your suggestions in mind--I honestly thought I could FIND enough gold to buy something decent in AH...but I'm glad i realized that it's quite hard to do so before I spent a lot of time on it!
As it is I have, with 5NV (fully stacked Nephalem Valor) around 130%+ Gold Find and I usually get a decent amount even in Hell. I'll keep searching for the gibbering stone thing (which I have yet to find!), level up my Followers, and Gold Find/Magic Find on the way.
But I'll also try Inferno A1 runs as well and see how those go. I totally wish I could take on Skeleton King or Butcher solo...but they're rough!
That's all great advice on farming.
Deeke, maybe you should look at your equipment, skills, and gameplay. I spent 50k on magic 1H 763DPS, I socketed with a Perfect Square Emerald (yep bargain should have been 250k). The whole game up to Act 2 Inferno was a steam roller. Not one elite pack I couldn't kill. The elite packs are much harder than Skeleton King or Butcher.
Actually I started Inferno doing badly until I read up in the Barb forum and worked out what skills and equipment I needed (mainly more resists). Point is you should be able to breeze Act 1 Inferno with cheap gear.
Yeah I can pretty much pwn Act I Inferno (besides the Skeleton King if I'm solo-ing), and I noticed that playing with a team I received a significant abundance of gold and items, moreso than what I received while playing solo.
Maybe it was just random, or maybe more players adds an extra chance. It is quite nice to build Nephalem Valor up, though, and it only seems possible (usually) when I'm with a team.
I just reached 1 Million gold earlier (took me long enough!!) and hopefully I can earn some gp via items sold in AH...but it's been a while since I've gotten any bids on anything I've put up, lol.
