So I just almost died on Andariel in Hell because of windowed mode..
I normally don't play windowed but I was watching a soccer game while clearing act 3 Hell. Then after I went back to Act I to do Andariel again for my angelic halo. Instead of exiting the game in just expanded the windowed mode so it felt like normal fullscreen (even though it wasn't)..
I was stupid enough to do her with only 3 poison resistance, so I had to keep spamming antidote potions from the inventory.. when I suddenly managed to click outside on the edge of the windowed mode and suddenly found myself in spotify.. I'm playing hardcore. Shivers went down my spine and I pretty much just froze up for something that felt like half a minute but prolly just lasted for 20 ms, thinking this is it.. level 80 for nothing! (I play untwinked and don't mule on or off so all will be lost when I die) ...I end up speedtabbing back into the right windowed (I had 6-7 tabs open som it actually took a couple of seconds or so it felt) ..spamming 4 44 444444 (revju) as I see that my barb is being hit down pretty hard and I survive.. though it was a really close one!
I played super careful the remaining time.. just feeling like I had a semi-trailer heading towards me on the highway just managing to jump away at the last moment.. not sure if I can play and relax at the same time again.. (maybe I'm not supposed to?)
NEVER gonna play windowed again.*slurp*
Short version: What's been your worst near death experience? Mine was playing windowed and losing the window.
When you are not actively in the window the game pauses, so you should have been fine (except having the game paused can sort of screw up your reflexes). however, that still sounds intimidating. Also, if you use Sven's glidewrapper (easy google find) you have have a mouse capture that keep the mouse within the window. I wouldn't play windowed if it weren't for this option.
My worst near death experience was somewhere in the ancient tunnels during the MFO. It was my first character to get that far, and I wasn't geared very well until the end of the week. It happened a few times, but I think the first was by far the most frightening. I was just teleporting about when I landed in between a zombie boss pack (an uncommon location for them) and they had fanat, and were cursed and somehow I decided to use glacial spike before teleporting, and it worked. I hit the rejuv about 2-4 times extremely fast before they were frozen, and I was pretty proud of that moment because I have never been quick to use potions (softcore for years, and stubborn as heck)
I guess I had to try this to see for myself, just standing in Rogue encampment now, and my game doesn't pause when it's not active, I'm looking at it right now as I'm typing
That sounded like a death if it had been meScary
I tried playing sorceress up to Hell myself, I don't have the nerve for it, got to the Barracks and all those fast female mobs with the lances just scare the **** out of me.. I don't understand how people get that far..
I think I'm done with Windowed mode for now, but I'll get Sven's Glidwrapper just in case! Thanks for the tip!
PS: I think I have a Voodoo 5 card somewhere that I can use instead!
PPS: Is it considered 100% legal to use this?

It doesn't!? Am I just assuming it behaves the same way that fullscreen does when tabbed out of? I guess I haven't tried with window, and since I haven't hit the windows key in a long long time that I wouldn't really know. I've only been playing windowed for about a year.
I just tested it, and the game doesn't open up the "escape menu" but it does actually pause it. What I did was walk into the blood moor until a zombie starting approaching me, at which point I back off a bit because I'm in hardcore, and then when the zombie was back on my screen and running at me I tabbed out for about 2 seconds and then opened the game back up and the zombie was in the same spot. Not quite as good as pausing the game for you, but definitely better than nothing.
cdm, why don't use try the mouse-capture?
My game definitely does not pause itself ever D:
As long as you don't have anything open on your desktop (minimize everything else) then the window won't disappear behind another when you click outside the bounds. You'll still lose focus when you do, if you don't like that then mouse capture works. It's probably a good idea to add:
RE if it's legal: It's a graphics driver ;D
My window stays up if I click outside the screen.... tards.... why have more windows open!? If I'm playing prior patches, .07/09, then the screen minimizes. I've never had a nde because of a misclick (hc also) but I have near-nde's and can see how one could.
What happened is that I kept clicking outside of the screen, as I have a habit (another d2 habit...) of slinging the mouse/hand/pointer all over the place whenever I'm on the computer.
Will have to think of one...
Windowed mode in combination with a lack of a mouse mat almost cost me my first Guardian. My desk is white, and mice don't like that, so my mouse pointer would randomly go to a corner of the screen. Or the mouse itself was faulty, I don't remember. Anyway, there wouldn't be much honor in such a death. :P
I almost lost my lv 95 zon like 5 minutes ago to a teleporting cold enchanted storm caster boss in CS. I kind of got cocky and was running 400 mf and -30 resists. I am usually good at killing cold enchanted monsters from a distance, but this one teleported right before death right next to me and a bolt from LF came back and killed it. I ate the frost nova and was dropped all the way to 36 hp. I kind of froze up for a second or 2 thinking oh %$!@ before I hit my full rejuv. Definitely not the best response cause there were other storm casters minions around that could have killed me if they hit me with there red fire thingy.
