People seem to think that high sales on release night means it must be good.. NOPE. High sales on release night = nobody knows the quality of it :(
I can see that argument, the difference there is that there wasn't a many year gap between them.
But you're completely correct, the Matrix was brilliant and the 2 god awful sequels were just thrown together garbage cashing in on the original, which as you noted was never, ever intended to have a sequel.
Hands down OP.
Last year the thought crossed my mind, but I was so blinded with hope...
Now it has officially joined my major nerd-disappointments in life. Not exactly in this order, just the order that they happened:
1. Matrix sequels
2. Lost
3. Diablo 3

The analogy holds to a certain degree, but there is an important difference: Phantom Menace was screwed up by Lucas himself, who also made the original movies, while D3 was created by a completely different team.
If that's true we'll need the equivalent of the RedLetterMedia reviews.
