Compared to the D2 mercs they're not that great. The mobs ignore my templar most of the time and thats even when he charges in to stun etc, he is only half-effective at getting the mobs attention. I think this is a big problem in D3, it is even a problem for pets with mobs ignoring them and going straight for the player. I feel like I rather have D2 merc system(maybe without the aura for balance) but they tanked very well besides end act bosses.
With my sorc iam using templar (full mf gear include weapon) for 150 regen aura and charge stun. Otherwise he is completly uselles in getting mobs attention. Would be great to equip him to best possible gear and let him tank but its not going to happen sadly. Also barbs monks would love enchanters to do some extra cool dmg and cc for them. But whoever come with these merc was wrong they are weak. Might not serve to use ah if would they work as in d2.
Templar is amazing from norm through hell. In inferno my DH gets one shotted from a2 onwards so that's useless except against reflect damage elites. Enchantress is pretty nice though, she'll push enemies away, turn them to chickens, confuse them, etc.
Monsters in D3 have way better AI, the ones in D2 were a complete joke because they only target the very first person they see.
yes, their purpose is to annoy you with inane dialogue
I really like the followers actually. I've found myself wanting to play single player a bit so I could mess around with them (although I haven't yet, not since my first run through on normal which i did solo so people wouldn't interrupt the cut scenes and dialogue. ... this was before I realized how let down I was by the cut scenes and dialogue).
My npc was quite handy though. As has been said, the templar will spot elites before they're visible on my widescreen, and alert you to them. That's pretty neat. Him and the enchantress have useful utility abilities, and you can really bump up his HP with +vit gear. They can bring a bit of extra MF/GF also, so what's not to like?
D2 mercs were great, apart from the fact that the dessert ones were obviously overpowered relative to the others in 9/10 cases. I think the idea of mercs as a really small passive bonus you don't have to pay for is quite nice though. I like their conversation, and if you don't blizzard has stated they're working on an option to turn that off in the future.
Yes its a companion to help you ! duh ^^
If you gear them up they are pretty insane(even in Inferno).
They are useless because at higher levels they die instantly so whatever bonuses they have to offer your character becomes completely irrelevant.
