Could somebody explain how the item lvl works with where in the game the item can be found. I believe it has a lvl 74 req so Im assuming it can only be found in the latter parts of hell. I found a shako a few weeks ago that my sorc is wearing now, but I would like to find a griffons eye. To those who have one where did you find it at. I don't have a particular routine for mf, but I usually hit andy, countess, summoner, trav, meph, diablo, nihaltek, shenk, and the throne room, but I have never found one in the few years I have been playing for some reason.
The Griffons Eye has an ilvl of 84, which means it will only drop in Hell and in areas with a lvl of 84+
Such areas are:
The Pit Level 1+2 (Alvl 85)
Mausoleum (Alvl 85)
Maggot Lair Level 1+2 (Alvl 84) +3 (Alvl 85)
The Sewers lvl 1+2 in Act3 and all the temples/"dungeons" in Kurast Bazaar - Travincal Causeway (Alvl 84-85)
City of the Damned (Alvl 84)
River of Flame (Alvl 85)
Chaos Sanctuary (Alvl 85)
Drifter Cavern (Alvl 84)
Halls of Pain (Alvl 84)
Halls of Vaught (Alvl 84) Nihalatak = lvl 87
The Worldstone Keep and to Baal (Alvl 85)
This means that a normal monster in these areas can drop ilvl items of 84 and below. To find the best items you need to kill monsters with an ilvl of 85. Which also is the highest tier of items. (Deaths Web/Deaths Fathom iirc etc..)
Note!
A champion will have its lvl +1 added to the alvl. And Unique monsters +3 to the alvl. So nihlatak has a lvl of 87!
Peace
Also Griffon's Eye is a ladder only item. If you are non-ladder (I don't know if you're ladder or not) then you cannot get it from monsters or things like treasure chests... .
Looking for specifically a Griffon's eye can potentially take ages. And with ages I mean ages. It is very rare.
Yet, Ive found 4-5 griffons last ladder. With my Sorc(~500mf) But I also only ran lvl 85 areas...
Peace
If I remember the drop calculator correctly it seems that Hell Baal is the only one that has a reasonable drop chance of griffs which is still pretty remote.
You can check for yourself here
RNG is RNG. It can also work the other way around. Even with 600% MF the % is still remote, D2 is pretty simple statistics wise, ilevel, alevel, base %chance to drop, MF to increase base %, etc. The RNG item drop is what fuels the item hunt in D2, but be correctly informed. Looking for specific items in D2 can take forever, or if you have the luck of the poster above, it can also be your next barrel kick. Again, RNG is RNG.
Might as well throw some hard numbers at this point. According to the drop calculator
It looks like Baal, Frozenstein, Pindleskin, Snapchip Shatter and Thresh Socket are the ones to hit if you're really going to try to specifically go after a Griffon's Eye. As others have suggested, aiming for a specific item of such rarety is pretty futile. If one drops count your blessings but you're probably much more likely to aquire one through a trade of some kind.
