More specifically, would you feel embarrassed if someone were to be in the same room while you were playing and overheard some of the cut-scenes?? I think I'd feel like even more of a nerd for playing a game with such a childish plot. I can't play for a few more weeks yet, but I've been scouring youtube and watching a few compilations... what I've seen so far is.... bad.
Diablo II (yeah i know another comparison), if someone were to see those while I was playing I'd be like "pretty badass eh?" "Yeah I'm a bit of a nerd but this is some quality material!" Probably make my fiancee watch a few. She'd probably be like "this sucks I'm going to watch Vampire Diaries." BUT at least she wouldn't be like "this sucks and also you're *** for watching this."
Best contrast I can think of is 2 scenes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R13KRWrbtQQ
Diablo II LOD: early cinematic at the barbarian city. long dramatic walk through some huge corridor to the gate. poor fat bastard gets sent outside the gates to confront Bhaal. Gates slam behind him, oh crap, I'm dead. Plucks up his courage anyways and *****es out Bhaal... ENOUGH!!! I shall take your position into consideration...." dramatic gestures, banners blowing around etc, BAM blows the poor jerk up. "Well... it seems your terms are not acceptable..."
Diablo III: death of Deckard Cain. wicked witch of the west?? what is she ranting about, ok she's explaining all her plots in intricate, poorly voice acted, detail. am I watching a james bond villain or a demon? ok i guess my rage overwhelmed her incompetent james bond henchmen... now she's telling me all about it like we're in some old school japanese kung fu movie. "your earth power is STRONG but it is no match for my secret martial art style.. NOW WE KUNG FU FIGHT!!!" nah just kidding i'm going to leave you with some sword pieces and just enough life left in Cain so he can fix the sword for you and you can level up and kill me later.
wow, terrible.
Well to be fair, you're comparing a cinematic with a in-game cutscene.
I think the in-game cutscenes in D3 are alright. Not anything to brag about but I'm most certainly not ashamed of them.
You're comparing an in-game cutscene with an act cinematic...personally, I felt the Act 5 Intro in D2 to be incredibly feeble. He's the lord of destruction, but it takes him like 20 seconds just to kill some schlub? Why am I intimidated by this guy again?
And if you've ever played any Blizzard game for the quality of the writing, then I really feel sorry for you.
The whole game has a very juvenile feel to it. And no vast amounts of tomato juice don't improve that
Btw I'm not saying this is somehow inferior design. It is clearly intended, it's the artistic sensibility of the current Blizzard. Who am I to say my artistic sensibilities are better. I just have to get my fix for dark and medieval from somewhere else. Like Diablo 2. lol
D3's in-game cutscenes are way better than D2's in-game cutscenes.
I actually liked them. But they were very much like Star Wars in theme. When I was playing with a few of my friends on the first day, after coming to the 2nd cinematic where Leah sets fire to Cain's body, as it closed I started singing the credit role music for Star Wars over Skype.
"That's exactly what I was thinking as I watched" was the basic response.
No "A" for originality, but superbly crafted and amazing digital cinematography.
I would say that the plot is silly, but the videos are well done visually. Especially the ends of Act I and Act IV.
And FWIW, I watch Vampire Diaries w/ my fiancee and she plays Diablo (II and III) with me.
Totally off point, but just thought I'd share.
Just a side note, if you feel ashamed doing anything around your fiancee, best of luck to you.
Same here sentarius :P
