Fate of the characters from D2

Alright, so if I remember correctly, Blizzard stated that we might meet some of the old player characters from D2 in D3, or at least find out what happened to some of them.

I've heard that the necromancer is in a special event in act 2, and somewhere we find out the sorc's fate, but I'm not sure about the rest. Does anyone know who else is in there?

The necromancer in the A2 event is a disciple / was mentored by the nec in D2. Question about the fates of our old heroes interests me as well! Where do we get info about sorc? It seems I've so far missed that one...

The sorc is in the Firefly short story: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/game/lore...-story/wizard/

Agreed on the first one. I also had a real "oh no, what a pity" moment.

Now that you mention Asheara, the Iron Wolf you come across in the beginning of Act 2, right before disrupting the Coven's ritual, is called Jarulf - which I remember was a common name of the Iron Wolf mercenary in Act 3 of DII.

Gharbad the Weak from Diablo I makes his return in an event in Act I.

Haven't encountered anyone else by my knowledge, but I haven't found all the events yet. No trace of the characters, except the Necromancer being mentioned by his disciple, as stated.

I find it a bit disappointing that Blizzard already stated that the Barbarian is not the same Barbarian from Diablo II. Can't really find a source right now, but I seem to remember reading it somewhere in a blue tracker. I was quite surprised: the older look, the same voice, ... When the character was presented, I was convinced he was the same guy and thought that was so neat. I see no clear reason as to why he isn't.

They said later that it had to do with dialogues. It would make no sense if deckard didn't know him, or Diablo, etc... They had to make a diferent dialogues and story just for the barbarian...

Hmm, good point, I didn't think of that. I understand a bit better now. One can say that a different dialogue is not really necessary, but that would take away the reason for making him the same person in the first place. In that case, you'd just forget it all the time. :-)

That said, it is still a pity. I understand not wanting to waste resources, but considering there are about 15000+ lines of dialogue in the game and only a few characters that this would apply on (Cain, Diablo and maybe Asheara to a lesser extent), I don't see it as too much effort.

Yeah, it definitely would have been nice touch to have special customized dialogue for the barb and the other returning characters. And just to be fair, you could do the same with the other character classes and other NPCs. Actually, they were able to do this slightly in D2, so it doesn't seem like it would have been too much work.

I suppose one possible problem would be for newcomers to D3 who hadn't played D2, but I think that could be fixed with some decent writing.
