I've spent some more time in inferno, and it turns out that my first elite pack was just a really nasty combination of mods. I usually only die once or twice to elite packs and sometimes not at all (I'm still in act 1, Halls of Agony 2). I'm able to get to 5 stacks of nephalem's valor every time I play, and it never runs out due to being unable to kill the next pack. I've even had to deal with two packs at once due to stupidly kiting to an area I hadn't cleared yet.
Oh, I didn't mention that I've changed builds again. I'm using what has become a cookie-cutter for wizards: venom hydra + blizzard + signature skill + defensive skills. Specifically:
Edit: Here's the skill calc version.
left-click: Hydra + Venom Hydra --- main damage dealer, acid pools stack up to 5 times
right-click: Magic Missile + Seeker --- free, no aim damage dealer
1: Blizzard + Snowbound --- used for slowing, minor damage
2: Mirror Image + Duplicates --- great at keeping me alive
3: Teleport + Wormhole --- ditto, good for covering ground too
4: Energy Armor + Force Armor --- good buff to armor and keeps you from being 2-shotted
Galvanizing Ward --- keeps armor on longer and heals me too
Glass Cannon --- bad for defense, but the bonus damage is nice
Illusionist --- really makes Mirror Image and Teleport shine. If you're quick with your hotkeys, it's pretty hard to die in most situations (absurd elite packs notwithstanding, and in that case, you at least have a chance)
I cannot stress enough how good Mirror Image + Teleport + Illusionist is. I've started thinking about tweaking the skills, and I think Energy Armor may be the first to go due to how effective that trio is. I'd like to swap Familiar + Sparkflint for Energy Armor and swap Glass Cannon for something more defensive, but I'm not sure what yet.
I don't think I've made any gear changes recently. I've focused on minimizing
for all damage types, though I focus a bit on physical and fire and I've also tried to keep life regeneration to heal while kiting. Obviously damage is very important too. I found a nice helm that also has bonus crit chance for Ray of Frost, so I'm considering trying a cold based build.
I basically have to kite all the time, which is not what I really wanted, so I've also leveled my monk up to 52. She just started hell difficulty, so maybe I'll make a thread for her, or just put it in this one.
