Nostalgia's Guide to Act 2 Inferno.

After taking into consideration people comments I've decided to revamp the thread to cater towards newer barbarians that are finding a brick wall when just entering Inferno Act 2. The advice on stat allocation is designed to be a start on how to distribute your stats WITH OUT HITTING DIMINISHING RETURNS. When I say to do not exceed I dont mean there is no benefit, I mean that there may be better ways to allocate your stats to make better use of your health and damage resistance.

    Quick Notes:
To make optimal use of stat points and effective health:

    Build I use: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...VSTP!be!YcccZZ
HP: Approx 50,000 more is good.
    Armor: No more than 10,000
    Resists: No more than 1,000
Damage: 10k-15k is optimal, more is good as long as you arnt sacrificing stat points for any of the above.

(After you are nearing this range of stats you are probibily pushing Act 3 Inferno, so any and all stat increases will benefit)

I've had a few people ask me to create a guide on where to be in terms of stats in order to be able to solo clear Act 2 Inferno, so I've decided to make this thread. Please note that the calculations and formulas I refer to are other people work and I am just using their work to create an easy to understand guide for everyone to use.

    Let's start with the build:

Cleave: More damage is always good, you can choose gathering storm if you prefer to be safer.

Warcry: Impunity is almost a requirement unless you got really lucky with gear (over 1000 Resist) and have extra stat points to spend on HP then choose Invigorate.

Revenge: Provocation is suggested because mob's hit less often (Champion's are a focus here) to do more damage in inferno so you will need every chance you can get, as well as more AOE damage is good. You can choose Vengeance is mine instead to get extra HP% but its not recommended.

Furious Charge: This is your main mobility ability. Don't over spam it. If you find you need to use it too much, then your prolly not geared enough for Act 2. Dreadnought is almost required for this ability as it provides a great amount of health, however Merciless Assault is another option.

Last 2 ability's: This is where you can experiment with different tools if you prefer. I choose Earthquake with the cold effect and Wrath Of The Berserker (WOTB) for added damage. This is the combo you will use to blow up Champion packs. If your damage is around 15,000 you will 1 show any pack of champions with few exceptions (shielding and extra hp). Earthquake gets bonus damage from WOTB so the earthquake damage is actually 4000% which is massive.

Passive 1: Nerves of steel is great for additional Armor depending on how much vitality you have. Note that if you have item's that have lots of +hp% items this passive will be seem good but will actully not be worth much. If you do find this to be the case take the passive "Tough as Nails" this will increase your armor by 25% instead. Maybe try 1 at a time to see which will benefit you the most.

Passive 2: Superstition is just a great damage reducer straight up. Not much more to say.

Passive 3: This one I left blank. You can choose more damage such as Brawler, or Tough as nails depending on what you need. Some find Invigorating shout works well depending on what your strongest stat is. Another good passive is Juggernaut if you find ice and jailers to be a problem.

    Health Pool:

You should be sitting around 45,000-55,000 anything more than this is bonus and is entirely up to you because there is no diminishing returns for bonus HP.

    Armor:
    ArmorDR.png

Your armor should be around 7,000 to 10,000 with out surpassing it. After 10,000 you will see reduced effect and stat points can be allocated else where.

    Damage Resist:
    ResDR.png

Your damage resist is similar to armor and should be in the range of 800-1,000 Don't push much over 1,000 because there are diminishing returns after this point.

    Damage and Life steal:

Damage should be decided after you have taken into account your armor, damage resist and hp. You want at least 5,000 dps so buy a good wep because this will most likely be your only source of direct damage. A axe with strength is optimal, however spears have higher base damage but are unable to be crafted. If you have life per hit that helps, but if you have health % per damage then maybe spend a few more stat points on damage.

Tip for Weps: Get a decent DPS wep with high Str and Vit, U dont need the highest damage wep, look aroun dthe 700-800 range and get a wep with good stats instead.

    FAQ:

Dex and Int; Do I need it?
A: Short answer is yes. Dex will give you dodge which is good, however you don't want too high of a dodge because you want to proc Revenge, but dodging an attack is absolutely helpful. Int as well is helpful to no real limit, Int increases your all resist so when you are deciding between items with all resist and another with high int actually look at how it affects your all resist stats, it is sometimes surprising how much int gives especially when below the 500 threshold.

What should I look for on shields?
On a shield you want to look for Vit, Str, All resist and especially + block%. Try find a shield with high block %. You want to block more often rather than for higher amounts. Your block is calculated after your damage resists so often you will block all the damage from an attack, so instead block more often that way you don't waste block amounts.

What do you mean by stat points?
A: Your gear in essence has a certain amount of stat points that it gives you to allocate amoungst your needed stats. Such as a item with vit and strength would give you stat points for HP and Dmg.

What about stats like "reduce ranged/melle attacks"?
These are obviously great stats and you should take them when ever you get the chance. However the amount of stat points they represent from another section is dependant on the situation and which item's you are comparing so its kinda situational. If you want to send me a PM with the items I could help.

Woah Woah Woah! Hold up a second Nostalgia!

How the hell am I able to get my stat's up that high, this seems impossible!
First off, calm down my friend, it is possible. Were in the first week of diablo 3, there is still lot's of time to get geared. Start slow, get gear to clear hell act 4, the first quest of act 4 done over and over is a great place to start if your gear is sub par. From there start working the AH, sell stuff you find and use anything that is going to benefit you. From there try find some deals to at least get you clearing Act 1 in inferno, this should get you the gear needed to start working up the stat chain. This wont appear in your inventory over night but you should see progression in weeks and hard work.

Re: Nostalgia's Guide to Act 2 Inferno.

Good write up. Personally had to change Brawler to Nerves of steel for extra armor.

You are missing two really important stats for barbarian, Dexterity and shield Block change + value. Dodge chance should be 20% meaning min 500 dexterity, after that you get diminishing returns for it and making other stats more important. Block chance, more the better and you should aim lev 60 shield with as much block value as possible.

I have 20% dodge, >72% armor and >73% physical resistance with shout enabled and due my shield lacking I still have hard time with Act2 elites.

Regarding damage I would consider anything below 10k dps being way too low for Act2. Personally have >11k dmg and most time I'm unable to kill champion packs with one EQ+WotB cd and have to kite.

Additional affixes like reduced melee dmg, life regen etc are also handy, unfortunately donīt have those much in gear so not able to comment how good these are.

One question about items. I havenīt found after NM not a single useful item for my barbarian, all bought from AH. Anyone else having same problem? I think this is one of the most critical design failures in game that AH is absolute must (would also be one reason why single player only would be not good progression wise.)

Thanks, yeah after writing it I realized that, I'll be doing some research and adding it in soon.

When you say 10-15k dps, I assume that's base, before any Frenzy/Berzerker buffs?

DPS that you see on your character sheet with passives.

Re: Nostalgia's Guide to Act 2 Inferno.

I don't think you can get these kinds of stats without spending at least several millions on gear, and probably more like 10-20 million if not more.

To be honest, with this kind of gear there are several builds that can work, really. For example the build I'm using now would probably waltz through at least the parts of A2 I've done already if I had this kind of gear:
    http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculato...TPk!ZYT!YYbbZc

Side note: Frenzy (preferably with sidearm) with a life on hit weapon will give you a lot more healing, might want to consider it instead of cleave, even though in the damage department it probably loses out.

I am a lvl 57 and have never set foot on inferno so far. But i have nearly 50k health and 6k dmg (with a 330 dps axe btw. lots of room for improvement...).
So i would assume your gear is not ready.
According to my character stats i picked up around 700k gold so far and i have still about 100k on me. So i would say it is not very expensive to work the auction house.

Nice guide. I've added it to the Barbian Resources.

I'll be adding more builds to that as time goes on, so if there's anything anyone thinks should be in there, please do drop me a PM.
