Everyone care about DPS, since everyone have abilities that can be spammed for no resource cost. However, certain classes/abilities/specs/situations favor higher weapon damage even if it comes at the cost of DPS. How much is worth it is very hard to calculate even if only roughly.
The game definitely doesn't do enough to show us the damage we deal per hit. Would be nice if alongside DPS they'd show the damage per hit and attack speed (unless they already do somewhere and I missed it).
Lack of ability to sort/filter by weapon damage is only 1 of many issues with AH searching. Overall it looks like the filtering system is basically Blizzard doing us a favor to even let us search...
You can enable floating damage numbers for each hit, which can give you some idea about the exact damage each hit deals. I find it interesting, and it even helps to evaluate benefits of gear changes beyond what the DPS number in char stats shows.
Hits per second can be seen in Details tab on char sheet if I'm not mistaken, but of course without taking into account skill mods.
Yes, but you have to go hit stuff and calculate an average, which doesn't really count for good user-friendly interface. Anything on your character screen can be calculated with a calculator, really, but that doesn't make it friendly either.
Hm, taking back my previous statement. I was tricked by high damage range the first time I did that test, cooldowns do not impart any special interactions to skills.
That said, Hydra is definitively an exception to the rule. Pick up a Frenzy shrine, it hits harder with eveyr hit.
Watching the floating damage numbers already made me switch a weapon since the one I was using before was occasionally showing low numbers - made me look beyond DPS to the actual damage per hit and finding the range very wide there. I prefer consistent damage output over random high bursts.
Of course, YMMV
