i play barb, lvl 52 atm, just entered hell, but from act 4 NM till now i have died 400 times, and used 300k in pots and repairs, atm its so bad i use cleave only, rest is defensive moves, Revenge, pain sub, Vita buff and warcry debuff, and leap to get away.
Normal packs go ok, killing speed is ok but every time i meet a bosspack im dead, so i die 10 times, remake game again and farm the low lvl mobs outside tristam, all boss packs seems to have somekind of melee stuff that kills me, while if i play in groups the ranged can kite them to death.
my gear is okeish, 20k life ( i wanted leech but dont really find anything) and ok dmg, its aplying the dmg that seems almost impossible, so any tips would be nice.

I had approximately 2k armor, 12% dodge, 20k health 1.8k dmg when I entered hell at 51. Situation was as you describe, bad news. I couldn't handle more than 2 basic monsters at a time.
Build was roughly, Frenzy, WW, Leap, Revenge, War cry (health regen rune), CoA. (Can't remember passives)
52 now, just did the Skelly King without any real trouble. 3k armor, 12% dodge, 23k health 2.5k dmg. Only gear change was to 1-h + shield from 2-h. Cost of the gear upgrade? About 80k on the A/H. Just bought a reasonably priced blue weapon with 200+ dps and str/vit. Shield is a level 51 req rare with vit and +% life, don't remeber what else.
Build now is Cleave-Rupture, Rend-Bloodlust, Ground Stomp-Deafening Crash, Revenge-Provocation, War Cry-Veteran's Warning, CoA-Duty to the Clan. Pound of Flesh, Superstition, Nerves of Steel.
You play alone? If so it's super hard to play barb alone.
Now i suggest ignore pain with leach rune, overpower with 30dmg reduce rune, revenge with 30% activation rune, frenzy with chance to stun enemy, warcry with 40% armor.
Get gear with "all elemental resistances" or "physical resistance". Even a mere total of 50-70ish will make a huge difference.
My build is leap with 300% armor increase at landing, revenge 30% active ,cleave rupture, war cry 50% all resist boost, ignore pain 7 sek .. 40k life 4k dmg 1h shiled ... but most important passives relentless a must have and nerves of steel! with this passives and leap buff 4 sek then 7 sek ignore pain i am able to tank some not ultra hard inferno packs ! d3 barb for now is massive armor and armor boost or u cant survive hell , let alone inferno maddnes there is champs that can 1 hit kill me without bufs ..that insane .2h sux for me .. low armor low str vita ..slow swinging ...stucked at butcher inferno for now
@VGZ: Butcher is really really easy for a barb. All of his attacks are avoidable. You should really give up some defense for damage on that one.
yeah its easy to avoid attacks if u learn sequences BUT there is timer and if u run out whole room start to burn
so i bought 1 Hander and shield after using a few hours grinding gold for it, and it goes better, im not lucky on drops but i get by slowly now, so im sure i can finish Hell soon, thx for the tips guys.
now for the Rant.
When i rolled Barb i did it for the WW, the Frenzy, Masive 2hander ect, not to play like a damn Tank Warrior from wow, some boss packs take 10+ min to kill (**** on ground, with chains between them) and the rest of the mobs also sort of slow,
i play alone alot but when i play with my friends they sort of laugh at how much i have to kite/Taktikal retriet for me to stay alive, i can see the game is not melee friendly but this is just sick, then my mate who play Monk, he stands in **** and tank 2 hell boss packs at once while i die trying to be usefull, and the ranged are well ranged, they dont worry about much it seems, atleast in groups.
so i have figured out i wont play my barb after i hit 60, i will use another char to farm gear for him so he can use some of his offensive skill i found attractive when i bought the game, not some turtle spec, i know i will have to kite ect as ranged but atleast i have the tools for it.

If you're having a hard time, go to the (gold) AH and upgrade your gear. At least until inferno, you can get some major upgrades for dirt-cheap prices.
Or go back and farm act 4 in nightmare. This morning I started hell, and I could already tell it was going to be a LONG journey through act 1. I decided to go back to act 4 nightmare and farm for gear. I ended up getting two one handed weapons, which ended up giving me a 500 damage upgrade. When I get home from work, I'm going to do it one or two more times in hopes of armor with more vitality on it, otherwise I'll search the AH for some stuff.
