Twin Chakram
Ball Lightning
I never said that. I said it did more damage, which from everything I've seen, it does. I've said Chakram hits twice...I've also said it hits 4 times. I've even seen it hit 6 a handful of times when the stars aligned on monster movement. For example, you stated that ball lightning hits twice, which was why you preferred it over multishot.
Volleys of multishot don't kill things for me. Volleys of other skills do. The other skills also cost less, and are much more flexible in their application (since there is only 1 viable rune for Multishot, where the others have at least 3). This isn't opinion.
Here's an opinion: People are clinging to multishot because they have fond memories of their bowazon, and don't want to give that up. I had this issue myself with Strafe in D3. Strafe was always my favorite D2 skill, and I wanted it to be good now as well. But it's terrible, and when I really looked at it, I realized that it is terrible and moved on to greener and more death-inducing pastures.
Strafe is an absolutely amazing skill. One of my favorites in the game so far. You can actually circle-strafe monsters with it!
My DH just entered Hell yesterday and I've used Multishot all the way (with Fire at Will obviously). I tried Chakrams for a bit but had a hard time hitting anything with them. I haven't tried Ball Lightning (or Elemental Arrow in any form) yet, so maybe I'll give that a try. But I still have no reason to abandon MS. It's just "blam blam" and then mop up the still living monsters with Rapid Fire.
I also use the Vengeance passive so maybe that's why I don't have trouble with MS's Hatred cost.
EDIT: Well I now tried Ball Lightning and boy, it's AWESOME.At least in Hell Act 1 I'm rocking with it so much that I think Multishot will have to be retired at least for a while.

I've run through this whole game in a group, so I can't speak about MS' viability in solo-play. However for group play it's atrocious for anything but normal mode. I tried it in nightmare for about ten minutes, and my killing power plummeted. It simply costs too much to sustain against the beefed up mobs even with fire at will.
We should be happy that we can discuss the viability of at least 3 skills in one class!
D2 seemed to be one trick pony builds for the most part.
Not really. In D2 no class had only 3 or less potential builds for beating the game PvE wise. And by the time you get to inferno you'll be using one of the two builds that everyone else is using. Unless you manage to gear up before you get there. Then you can run with some more variance. Until then though you will be pigeon holed.
Can you link me to the two standard builds? Thanks!Originally Posted by Killafornia

Just swap out sharp shooter or night stalker passives as you prefer for either one. Currently farming act 1 with 200% gold find. Getting about 400k-500k gold running from karzha barricade to the butcher.
I finished act 3 inferno today. Azmodan took a few tries, but what really kicked my *** was his spider wench. When she hits 25% she starts spawning clusters of baby spiders underneath your feet nonstop, and they all 1shot you. She spawns like 6 waves in succession and each wave has like 5 spiders. If you don't deal with them fast the entire level fills up with them and you have no room to kite. I had 5 stacks of nephalem valor and within the 25 minutes wasn't able to kill her. Then after my NV buff expired i said f'it and changed my nether tentacles over to multishot to deal with the babies. The wider cone of effect made the fight a hell of a lot easier. Only died like 3 times after that before killing her.
Wow sounds terrible. I had no idea she spawned those. In all the other difficulties she just died without even putting up a fight.
