I'm using a 1H axe and shield, and my damage would be MUCH, MUCH lower if I equipped two weapons due to all of the Strength on my shield (+107 or so!) so I'd say look out for shields that will boost damage - they'll make up for the damage lost from 2h/dw while giving you good defenses as well.
Yup - 1h+shield = winning. Nothing else can compare.
Forget what I said before about going dual-wielding. It was all going well until I got to Act 3 where I started to die every 2-3 minutes.
I HAD to switch to a shield and now I don't regret it.
You can go dual-wielding through Act 1 and 2 with no problem, but you'll need to switch to a shield in A3.
I got myself a good shield off the AH when I got to hell and I must say it's safer and I'm still killing things fast enough.
I dual weilded through normal and act 1 nightmare. Then sword and shield for half of Act 2. Then I got a good 2-hander followed by another latter on and I've been using those through the rest of nightmare. Just starting hell and I'm really wishing I had a good shield and 1-h; I was on the look out all through nitghtmare but all the 1-h and shields I found were not good).
I'm 60 in inferno - with a friend, who is also a barbarian. He has a cool 2h weapon nog - and does a lot more damage then me, but also dies very often. My shield is I guess what keeps me alive.
I'm currently up to Act 1 Inferno, done mostly solo with a little party action with a Demon Hunter friend. What I've found is that weapon DPS is king. Every other stat pales in comparison. Killing mobs before they kill you seems to be a constant theme starting in the later acts of Hell. I like to have a 2 min CD on hand for every champ pack(usually wotb runed for 100% dmg). I run Wotb(100%dmg)/Revenge(30% proc)/battle cry(30%dmg)/overpower(8%heal per mob)/frenzy(5%dmg stack)/war cry(50%resists). When engaging any particularly difficult group of enemies without wotb up it normally comes down to keeping overpower on cd and spamming revenge. The war cry rune also applies to physical resistance as well, which is a significant reduction if you already have a decent amount of resists.
