Just a quick question: is elemental damage on weapons taken into consideration when calculating damage for spells like how plain +damage is?
Yes it is.
To elaborate somewhat, they are indeed included in the damage of skills, but if the skill deals a specific damage type (even Physical) then the damage type on your weapons will be converted to the skill's type.
I'm a little confused...so unlike D2, weapon dmg and speed affects spell dmg and casting speed, correct? So even equipping a bow or an axe would increase your spell dmg?
Sorry to just drop in on this topic but I'm a bit embarrassed and don't want to create a new topic for it haha.
^ Yep all weapons effect your spell damage from a wand to a staff to a massive two hander and all damage on it applies (IE the charater screen damage is your base DPS used for everything).
Now that's interesting. So with say Magic Missile +physical damage from weapon would actually mean +arcane damage.
Casting speed is influenced by attack speed, be that on your main weapon or anywhere else on your characters items.
Casting damage is calculated through weapon damage, intelligence and other damage sources on your items.
Where as with channeled spells (Ray of Frost, Disintegrate, ...) you will not be looking for slower weapons, opposed other spells, where you will be looking of faster weapons.

Answer is in this thread by Jedouard - Disintegrate and Slow Weapons - How to Sweep
Until I found out that Ray of Frost (and thus most likely Disintegrate) immediately does damage upon making contact with an enemy and then reverts to its tick. I pulled out a heavy hitting, but slow (1 attack per second) two-hander and started to test. It worked great. My damage was higher and even though the tick rate was lower, targets took damage immediately upon contact. All I had to do was keep sweeping back and forth.

It doesn't matter if you channel you attack, it only matters if you use spell like Ray of Frost to only do 1 hit and then stop.
