I didn't participate in any of the cool tourneys you guys are always doing in diablo 2 but im thinking that may change with d3. Im wondering how bad the limit of 10 chars will handicap this as obviously at the start it will be fine but eventually i think people may run out of room to make new chars.
Im guessing it will be possible to buy more slots but is this something you guys would consider doing down the road? It depends on the price of a slot obviously but i also know some of you had a crazy amount of builds. For instance we wont be seeing a sept unless you delete your builds as you go along.
Could be a problem, but hopefully won't be too bad. Right now they sell for $6 a pop, but you have to buy 10. Aka another copy of the game for a second account.
Wait wait wait wait wait, Blizzard are selling more character slots for real money?
Technically yes, but what kegsie is getting at with his subtle joke is that you can always get another ten slots by purchasing another copy of the game.
I'm not at all certain, but I'd guess it won't happen. It wouldn't surprise me since I think Blizz is desperate for steady revenue now that they're seeing subscriptions fall steadily, but so far the ability to purchase extra character slots hasn't happened in WoW. I don't forsee more slots available until at least the first expansion (same with more stash space), and I'd also expect them to be free.
As for the topic itself, I think this question is too complicated; forget the tournament part, then answer "How restricting is the 10 Char limit?" to find your result. How will you manage your ten slots? So if you wanna participate in tournaments, instead ask yourself how will you manage your nine slots.
So... how will you manage your characters in general, SPF? What happens when you're out of slots? What's it mean to have freespecs on every character; does it impact your personal build commitment or will you find comfort knowing that all you'll ever need are one of each class at clvl60 to do whatever you want at any time?
Well, technically you'll have 30 slots, only on different servers.
Different servers can be a solution.
10 slots is very restrictive for some people. 5 SC "pats" + 5 HC "pats" = 10 slots. Since I don't play HC, I'll have 5 slots for tournments if I don't make 5 SC Pats + 5 SC Mats (which was the initial plan) and erase chars after tournments.
The whole "slots" thing is restrictive by itself. I.E: Nightfish would used at least 49 "slots" for his HC characters on D2 (7 HC pat/mats for each class), maybe more... A SPer can't have enough slots...
technically 51, cuz the sept sept got out of hand, and counting was a bit off at some point.
I get the point. I have SOOO many unfinished SP characters, that 10chars seems like wayy too little.
G.R.D. (Maybe HC is the way to go. That will restrict the number of slots without any effort on my part. And the hall of the dead is extra slots, for old characters.
)
It will be tough for tournament play especially, no doubt.
I think in tournaments we may end up just having to limit respecs like we do now. During normal gameplay I will definitely be using respecs to try all the skills out.
I don't feel like it will restrict my abilities to play in tournaments much. I will have 5 SC characters and 5 slots for HC tournaments. I don't think I ever played in a SC tournament anyway.
But it probably will impact the people who host tournaments in that fewer people will participate due to no character slots available.

I plan to have few tournament chars, as I don't plan to quit d2 (restarted, hadn't play it a lot, but still want sp grail + rw grail. Yep, I know... At least I'm giving up on the self-found part...).
That means 1-2 chars that will be erased after the tournament ends + 5 SC chars. If I was into HC/duels, that would be different history... (5 SC + 5 HC + 1 Tourney + 1 Dueler + Mules = not enough slots)
