Thanksgiving: The day we celebrate that we won against the indians, stole their lands and put them in American Indian reservation thingies.
For the indians thanksgiving is knows as the "national mourning day".
Yay lets be thankfull!
It might be short sided cause most americans might not know nor care, or be thankfull to the lord or land for a good harvest but it might just be a cover up holiday for genocide.
Read here for more.
And down here: Holidays are holidays. Usually there are calendars with the days people won't work. The don't ask why, they just don't work. Some people not even know what the holiday means. (Seriously - a few people mix Independence day with other holidays... )
I don't know why thanksgiving started and if people still do the turkey/we're thankful about.../etc. on other countries. Down here a holiday (for some people) means - "yep, whatever, beach + car + beer" (note: not even a sunny and bright weather is required). Names/motivation is considered by some "overrated".
Even Christmas is losing meaning/references here.
I try to see such holidays as: at least a good bunch of people try (yep, it's bold) to get inside the same room for more than 5 minutes and be thankful for something, for a change. This happens on Christmas around here, even if some people claim that it's impossible to tell in which day JC was born (if you consider he did). If wasn't that day, my entire family would never sit down for a meal together (I know it because I only see my entire family on christmas eve, mostly because I'm the troll that isn't there on the other days).
Nothing against people that do and/or think otherwise (ex.: non-christians that don't celebrate Xmas, indians that don't celebrate thanksgiving, etc.).
I know almost zero about culture, probably zero about american and foreign cultures, but I think that people celebrate based on cultural meaning of the holiday, not the historical/original/religious meaning. Ex.: If everyone that declares him/herself catholic and celebrate Xmas decided to attend a mass on christmas, well, it would be a logistic problem... At least in my town.
I just celelbrate not having to go to work![]()
