Item for item trading is one of the most important features of diablo!
All i'm hearing about reguarding trading is auction house and how it is designed to sell items for ingame gold or real world currency. Well ingame gold has always been useless, and as for trading with real world currency; i have to believe that there are other players out there like me who dont want to spend real money on virtual items or bother with trying to sell virtual items for money...
Are those actually our only two options?? Do we have to go back to "drop trades" if we dont want to spend money??
I have waited ten years for this game, i feel like blizzard totally sold me out...
D2 had a terrible economy. With D3, they've switched it to where gold should be the standard currency (hopefully) so there isn't a need for a item for item trade. Instead of having that great Griff and wanting to trade it for a Great Fathom (or whatever was really good) you can just sell the Griff for gold, then use the gold to buy whatever item you want. The new system is infinitely better.
That said, you can still trade items for items. Take advantage of random games... play with people and just let them know when you join what you have for trade. If someone is interested, they'll message you and you can work out a trade.
In-game gold is definitely not useless in D3. Blizzard has been kind enough to include a lot of worthwhile gold sinks.
That being said, item for item trading will still be in the game. There is still a trade channel on bnet and there is a trade window that works exactly the same as it did in D2. I'm sure there will be people on these forums looking to trade item-for-item as well.
yes you can still trade items for items, there is a trade window.

D2's gold was useless..... And that means D3's gold will be??? Yeaaaaa...... Ok, good logic there bud. Sell an item for gold, and buy an item with said gold. Like most hardcore players will be doing..... Also there is a trade window, and a trade chat channel if you so desire.
trading item vs item with firiends is good idea, no fee
Even though gold will have a more important role in the D3 economy than it had in D2, i do not intent to keep most of my wealth in gold. I will probably choose some easy to trade item that will not inflate like gold, gems maybe.
Funny, in real life i changed my wealth into gold to combat inflation, in D3 i will be changing my gold into other things to protect myself from inflation
Just like every real world currency in history at some point died to inflation, so has every ingame currency been the subject of inflation. It would be a miracle if it weren't true for D3.
The gold auction house doesn't have a fee either.
Gold is a much quicker way to get your item's worth. Say you want to trade an item with a fictional Gold worth of 5000 for another item worth 5000 (a fair trade). Wouldn't it make sense just to get the gold from the AH instead of waiting for to find someone with the other item you want? And you can spend the money you get by selling on different things if you make up your mind.
Gold is a much better system, as nearly everyone has pointed out. You don't have to wait for someone to want the item you have and have the item you want, and it is much, much easier to amass wealth with gold, rather than trying to store your wealth in a ton of items.
Also, even if at some point gold has no strong meaning in the game itself, I'm sure the players will give it value and meaning for the sake of having a common currency to trade with. As long as the gold cap isn't easy to reach it should hold strong, and with 100,000,000,000 being the max you can list an item for on the AH, it seems like the gold cap will be pretty high.
