I did this for Battlefield 3 and Skyrim and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work with D3. Obviously I'd have to recreate my character for the US Servers.
Anyone else think of any reasons why this won't work?
Won't work because Blizzard won't allow any logins from Battle.Net accounts which are registered to users outside Europe before ALL the servers are live.
You'd have to create a european Battle.Net account and waste a CD key to do that.
Seems like I can change the "location" of my battle.net account. Maybe I just moved to a new country?
The game has been years in the making and you can't wait a few hours? Come on
You'll get up to the skeleton king, your home region will open up, and then you will have to start over. So you'll have basically just played the beta again.
European servers are going up 9 hours before US. I'm sure I'll get through a lot more than that.. :P
The only reason I want to play 9 hours early is to help farm a little gold and commodities for my EU friends.
Leave our servers alone you jankieJ/k
But how come you want to play on the EU server? Shouldn't the asian one start even earlier considering they are ahead time-wise?
You can, but it requires a CSR to make the change and they may ask you for some kind of proof of where you've "moved" to. If you intend to use the RMAH it'll almost certainly also change it so you will be able to use the EU RMAH, of course you'll lose access to the US RMAH in the process. Then when you want to change your location back to the US you're going to have to ask them to change your location again.
I'm planning to do this, though it's easy for me since Elly and Rush are in the UK and can create accounts from boxes or digital purchase which I can then connect to. Anyone can do this though, as far as I can tell. (I've been watching the issue closely as our launch day plans involve live streams from the ECT 00:00 go, which is 3pm my time.) It's not "wasting" a game either, since you can play play on other realms once they're live. As far as I can tell, the only drawback is that you can only access the RMAH on your home realm. You're limited to GAH on other realms.
News today from Bliz is that global play wont' be available until all the realms are up, but that's global play where you connect to your home realm, and then choose to play on another realm. That wouldn't prevent someone from the US or Oz or anywhere else from creating their initial account on the EU realm.
Also, this isn't some digital DL-specific thing; you could do it with a box copy; you'd just have to get your hands on one that far in advance of the midnight launch in your region.
