I'm curious if anyone has experience with "true max settings" and can thus make a sound GPU recommendation.
I'd like to keep high FPS in four-person multiplayer, with tons of on-screen action going on. It's hard to even fully test this as we're yet to play inferno. Think Baal's minion chamber, but in D3...
That said, can anyone make an educated guess as to whether a card like a 7850 will truly play smoothly at "max settings"? I fear that many posts I find regarding this an the beta are short-sighted and quote FPS from Tristram...
*assuming 1920x1200, i5 2500k and 8g ram.

7850 is a little bit faster than the 560ti so if you want to go with AMD 7850 is a good choice
A 7850 should be able to handle 1920x1200 maxed quite easily.
I belive anything from gtx 260 should run it at max just fine.
My Radeon HD 7950 kept even the skeleton/pillar event in the beta with 4 players at more than 120 FPS. 1920x1200 res with everything maxed.
According to reviews, the 7850 is about 25% slower compared to the 7950, so I think it will stay above 60 even in the most extreme events.
Edit: Actually my 7950 is factory-overclocked to 900MHz (up from 800), but I still think even the stock 7850 will be more than sufficient for keeping the FPS above 60 at all times.

You would get maxed settings even with this, if you want cheaper, less power and heat consuming card.
There are really mixed opinions about min fps. If you read bn support forums, people with top tier hardware dropped way below 60fps in crucial moments of the game (pillars), so to know the answer, we need to wait for retail fully optimized client.
I think these were propably the optimization issues they were talking in blue posts more than graphic demanding scenes.
I use http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006GTDROU?tag=b006009l68-21 and really old dual core e6300 and got about 40-60..on maxed with everything(aa too) 1680x1050 sometimes it spikes me to 25-35 but only in those scenes that are clearny not optimized.
Diablo 3 performance, benchmark
