So the problem with Hardcore is that you can incur a loss due to technical reasons, which is obviously just a permanent reality of the game type. While the proposal of making a new difficulty type where the penalty is less severe is interesting, I think it would be a net negative for the game.
First reason: it diminishes the reward for playing real hardcore. It is an entirely different game experience than softcore because having a max level HC character is proof of an accomplishment. If there are other difficulties where you can do the exact same thing except with a safety net, it eliminates the stark contrast between a HC and a SC character that is part of the badass feeling.
Second: If you want a new difficulty created because you'd enjoy it if the punishment was less severe, then why not a new difficulty type for people who prefer a different penalty? One difficulty for losing all your items and half of your levels, one difficulty for being moved to softcore, one difficulty for being moved to softcore and losing your items....why not? I'm sure there'd be thousands of people out there delighted to get to play HC with the penalty structure they want. But that sounds infinitely less cool than having just hardcore and softcore, does it not? There is something about that dichotomy that is important. The very concept "mediumcore" makes me (and I assume many others who read it) cringe. Aristotle's golden mean belongs in the real world, not in Diablo!
Other people getting what they want somehow costs "true hardcore" players their enjoyment, somehow, then? Even if hardcore remains, completely unaltered, in its current form in addition to whatever new ruleset gets created?
brilliant xD
Go to softcore and try not to die.
Solved.
I'd like to have something like this, softcore but with (more) penalties when you die. Maybe something like character locked for 3 days and lose of 3-5 levels whenever you die. Maybe even a small chance to lose some equipment?
Not really. There could be different title and achievement for those "pseudo-hardcore" players who haven't died. It's not real hardcore, but it's clearly not softcore either, so there definitely is "medicore" in it.
I actually have completely different approach to this. I kinda think HC should be "me against the world" where player does everything by himself so I wouldn't mind if HC characters didn't have any shared stash at all. Twinking is against the whole (my) idea of hardcore.
Would i play medicore? No sounds like a pain in the *** losing half levels.
You wouldnt get the same rush from medicore, but and it would be more 'annoying' on death as you have to trudge back to where you were.
Id rather just play softcore most the time.
Then play hardcore further down the track like i did in diablo 2 and if I die in hardcore then thats it, get over it and either start again / make an entirely new type of character or do something else.
The whole point in hardcore is the rush / excitement of having to really try hard and not die cause ur really dead.
Hardcore -> softcore does = softcore. You died and it wasnt permanent so its softcore.
Also there is a character limit of 10 = 1 character of each class for softcore + hard core. They wont add more.
