Can u trade items to items?

Been reading about the AH stuff and im under the impression its only gold to items or real money to items. say it aint so? its not a deal breaker for me ill still get the game and have tons of fun but some of the funnest times i had in d2 was when i traded some of my items for other items. i get the point behind not having it (lets face it, d2 economy was just hr's). but i did all my mf legit in d2 so i didnt have godlike gear so never got into hr currency.

so if i find a godlike bow of death and i have a barb, dont wanna use it. and some random pub guy in my game finds a godlike sword of smashing we just cant trade items right there? we gotta do it via AH and its only for gold or money? how would i get my godlike sword of smashing? kinda lame -_-
